I love these and had to have them until I saw the price :-0 http://www.vitsoe.com/en/gb
Does anyone know of any good alternatives. I love the minimal 50s-60s aesthetic and the idea of having them for life.
Thanks,
C

Hi C,
My advice would be to save up for it and buy a bit at a time. I know this probably seems strange advice on a money-saving forum, but it's what I did 17 years ago. I started off with a few shelves from Vitsoe and over 17 years have kept on adding as needed/when I had some spare money. I've never regretted a penny I've spent on Vitsoe, even though it's pricier than most other shelving, whereas I've bought plenty of other cheap shelving in the meantime, and eventually had to throw it away, thinking "why didn't I buy Vitsoe in the first place?" A case in point is my CD storage. I bought lots of Ikea Benno CD towers to hold my CDs a few years ago. Now I'm going to have to get rid of it all, because we're remodelling the room the CDs are in into a child's bedroom. The CDs will have to move into the front room, but not the CD towers; they won't fit. So I think I'm probably going to have to buy more Vitsoe, which I should have done in the first place. Buying something once and keeping it for life is, I think, ultimately the best money-saving option. Money-saving, to my mind, isn't (just) about buying the cheapest possible option, but at looking at value over time. In addition, if you ever did want to get rid of your Vitsoe, it hold its value really well on the second-hand market. Just take a look at eBay listings. My Benno CD towers, by comparison, are pretty much worthless.
In case anyone thinks this is just an advert for the company, it isn't. I don't work for them, I've just been a very happy customer for 17 years, and admire their philosophy of longevity in an increasingly disposable world, and of paying a bit more in the first place but keeping something for longer.
If, despite my best efforts, you're not persuaded to buy Vitsoe, a decent alternative might be the String shelving system by Nils Strinning. In Britain, it's sold by Skandium and Twentytwentyone, among others. Like Vitsoe, it's been around for a long time, can hang on the wall or stand on the floor, and has a similar aesthetic. Be warned, though, the shelves are nowhere near as strong (I've seen them bowing under heavy weight, even in the showrooms! They're made of wood rather than metal).
Hope this helps! All the best,

Thanks all. The Vitsoe definitely gets my thumbs up. I would love to buy bits at a time but there is the postage to be paid (I know, what a stinge). There is also the issue that if I only bought a few shelevs it would look a bit odd as I need to cover quite a large area.
I have made the decision to go with Vitsoe but save up for a few months. It's killing me not being able to get them now.0 -
Hi all,
Bit late into the discussion here, but the chrome shelving is definitely worth a look, quite attractive (for shelving) and strong too. I have some in my garage and I hang stuff from the edge of the shelves. A little fiddly with the plastic collars but it's not too bad.
The Vitsoe shelves look really attractive though so might look at those for inside the house - thanks.0 -
Try building up a collection of Ladderax.
It will be a good investment for the future.0
