Credit Card & Airmiles - Is it still worth it?

Options
Afternoon all

I'm just after a quick bit of advice if I may?

I'm looking into opening a credit card as i'm buying some equipment worth about £2000. The credit card i'm looking into is the BMI Visa card. I thought it worth while getting something extra for the money i'm going to be spending. I won't have a problem paying the money back but just wondering if, because of the recent change to airmiles, is it still worth buying a card for airmiles??

I'm off to Boston, USA next year so thinking of getting as much of that ticket paid for as i can...

many thanks for any feedback

it wont be worth it, airmiles half the time are more expensive than buying it else where. Good for the activitys though
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Well my view is that if you are not earning air miles through regular flying then they are a waste of time. You are not going to get enough through use of a CC alone to pay for any significant flight. OK it would be useful topup but that's all.

I'd look for a cashback card instead

The recent changes have reinforced that view.

    Others may have different ideas.

Agree it wouldn't be worth it, although one point to note is that the OP was talking about BMI Visa, so not actually airmiles so won't be impacted by the current changes (Until/unless the proposed purchase of BMI by IAG goes through of course!)

Thanks so much for your input. With the BMI card, if I get one before November 30th and spend £250 in the first 90 days, i'll get 25,000 destination miles (which didn't realise were actually different to airmiles, my bad) - but with this number of miles, plus £140 I can get a flight to Boston... if i'm looking into this correctly?! So, I can get a return economy flight for £140?

I personally don't know how the BMI system works but check to see if you have to pay "taxes and charges" on top of the £140.

As Fruit & Nut says check the details, and if they're what you want then go for it. Opening offers can be profitable, but as a longer term solution you'll probably find the miles aren't great.
  • cool, thanks for all your advice guys. I'll post back what happens...!!
