Hfc bank being awkward

I had a revolving credit card with HFC bank. I opened it in 2005 and settled the account at the end 0f 2008.
I stupidly didn't keep my paperwork but wrote to them requesting info under section 77-79 CCA 1974 and sent a cheque.
They wrote back and said they did not have any of my details as the account was over 6 years old.
I settled the account in 2008 so surely they must still have my details.
I rang them and they were awful. I said I had a bank statement with the direct debit to them shown and they have stated that unless I can find the account number myself they won't do anything!
What should I do? Go direct to the ombudsman or should I write to them again with a copy of the bank statement. The statement sadly does not show my old account number.
Any advice would be great.

They are under no obligation to provide data on a closed account other than through a Data Subject Access Request - and that would only yield information a temp could reasonably be expected to find from the information available.
It sounds like you will not be able to prove a PPI policy ever existed.0
