Merchant account & Chip and Pin machine... Far too many to choose from

Hi all

I am currently shopping for a credit card payment solution and mobile chip & pin. These are quotes I gathered:

WorldPay
£200 one off payment
£25/month for merchant account
£40/month for mobile chip & pin device or
£24/month for 3 year contract for mobile chip & pin device.

SagePay
£20/month for merchant account
Their card rates are looking nicer than Worldpay

Lloyds cardnet
They are still to contact me

Chip&Pin solutions
They'll contact me soon

What are you guys using and can you recommand any?

thanks

Have you looked at the deal the FSB can provide?

Check out what trade association or group deals you can sign up to as well, generally you need to get some type of group deal to be able to get a good rate.

Is the Sage Pay £20/month include a mobile machine? This is what we are paying for a fixed machine.
  • The last company I worked for used Worldpay and we had no problems with it. Personally I prefer Sagepay but I guess it'll all come down to cost!

    HSBC
    £150 joining fee
£31.20 per month for mobile terminal
    £25 minimum charge
    1.7% on Credit Cards
    25p Debit Cards

Allied Irish Bank (Merchant account only)
    £50 joining fee
    1.4% Credit Cards
    30p Debit Cards
    £15 minimum fee

    Pay Yours (Mobile Terminal only)
£300 + vat One off payment
    £7.50 per month

So far I am leaning towards HSBC. From what others quoted me, they seem to be the best.

The Irish Bank, I have never heard of them before and a quick research tells me they have a poor customer service.
I don't know if you guys can echo this.

In the long run, purchasing a mobile terminal is the best way. Maybe I'll take a machine from Pay Yours and take a merchant account from HSBC.
  • It might be worth checking out the chip and pin offer from The Guild of Jewellery Designers. They have a two tier rate, one for silver members (silver membership is free) and one for gold members (annual subscription).

The silver member rates are much better than anything that has been quoted in this thread + there is no set-up/joining fee and the gold member rates are even better.
When you take into account that the cheapest gold membership fee is £49 pa (less than many merchant set-up fees), it's worth considering joining just for the favourable rates.

And doing the free silver membership is a no-brainer ;)
