Insuring partner on my car

This is probably a really stupid question but... I want to insure my partner to drive my car. We each have our own insurance at the moment for our respective cars. Should I include him as a named driver on my insurance, or should he include my car on his insurance? Is it much of a muchness and worth getting quotes from each company and choosing the cheapest? Is one method going to offer more protection than the other? Please help!

Provided your partner is not a high risk (ie, under 18, drink drive/speeding convictions) you will find that most of the time, putting your partner onto your insurance brings your premium down.
Try it with an online quote. Do yourself first and get a quote, then go back and add a partner and you'll find the premium is usually less - something to do with 'partners' being more mature. If you have kids and are married that also helps, again, suggests you are matured and sensible.
I've always put my wife on my car and vice versa - at the very least it means if your partner crashes the car you don't lose you no claims bonus and vice versa - one less thing to row about then!.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Thanks JasonLVC. Unfortunately he does have 3 points but will do as you suggest and do an online quote with and without and see where that leaves me. Thanks for such a quick reply!!! Pink Pixie:footie: Mummy to 2 boys - born 2009 and 2011 :footie:0

3 points is fine, most insurers don;t bat an eye lid nowadays - 3 points is almost as good as a clean license and shouldn't affect thing too much, if at all (insurers had to do something as almost everyone has points these days so they'll raise a slight eyebrow to 3 points/1 indiscretion, but will certainly hammer you for more than that.)Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. You would have to add him to your insurance as a named driver, as you can't insure a car more than once.0

Are you sure about that? I'm named driver on both cars and I crashed one last year. If hubby hadn't protected his NCB he would have lost it even though I am only a named driver. I'm sure that if a claim is made on a policy and NCB isn't protected you lose NCB regardless of who made the claim on the policy.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
You are correct, the policy is for the car, not the person, so a claim by any driver will affect the NCD.
And not all insurers ignore 3 points on a licence. My daughter's 3 points cost her an extra £40.0 -
Thanks for the clarification on NCB's.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0

It really depends on the age of the drivers, most insurance companies still class anyone under 25 as a young driver and therefore premiums could go up. Like someone else has said get an online quote (best through quidco for the cashback, a few places offering about £100!). Good luck!:j Egypt 10th May - Here we come!!!:j0
