Thank you for your excellent contribution to the thread, I note your very good points - but would like to pull the above out for comment.

To answer your suggestion above I need to fill in some of my background and where I am coming from ......

I lived in the North for the first part of my life, times were tough - really tough.

I cut my knees on the cobblestones which made up the back streets of Middlesbrough.

Moving down South in a desperate attempt to better myself, I struggled with the difference in the cost of living - in fact, I was in so much debt 45 years ago that I had to sell my old car and walk!!

No TV, no heating, no XBOX, no mobile phone contract. nothing of the things today are considered absolute minimums!!

So, now, due to hard work and the wise use of available funds I am rather well off.

I know what it's like to be really poor and I know what I had to do to pull myself around ..... I can talk with authority on both walks of life.

Maybe I am detached from the poor side of life these days - but, as long as those complaining that they cannot put food on the table, smoke, drink, have a mobile and TV and car ... I'm afraid I cannot take them seriously!!

Very few people on here are really poor ....... how do I know that? Well, who is paying for their internet use??? Yeah, odd isn't it?

Blimey you a bull caught in the headlights!

Wasent being so nosy that required life story or postcode to google earth you:rotfl:

Just wanted you to accept that the housing market is regionalised.
no point buying now in area with fallling house prices or properties that my be difficult to sell on ect.

Its admirable how you built yourself up from nothing.

But realise and appreciate not everyones as wealthy and dare see be a bit more tactful at times as can never tell from some of your posts if you trying to wind up the bears up or just not thinking even if your advice is well meaning.

    Plus we now in 2011

technology is a way of life lot of forms have to be filled in online
    all advice is now online
    all job applications on line

so internet/computer essential for peoples work, kids homework ect must say my netbooks tad lighter than the entire 52volumes of joy of knowledge my dad brought me as a kid.

Mobiles way of life people expect to be contacted all times

could be work, could be school saying childs sick ect.

gaming-think mostly teens to do that dont really have much respect for adults addicted to x box think its bit sad.
technolgy wasent there when you were younger.
plus prices have afallen for most electrical goods.

I agree people dont need brand new i pads or smart phone thats tehiur choice.

cars most people need for work and price of running a car high but so is public transport often more expensive hubby travels 62miles a day each way so needs his car.

    inflation/cost of living rising
adding to high rents makes it hard for people to save.
    lots people lost their jobs
lots people fear they may lose their jobs in next 6-months to a year,

with the economy so uncertain people reluctant to make any large impulse purchases never mind buy a house!

none of us truly know how the market will go.
This recession feels different from the last too house crashes/recessions we dident have credit crunch in the banks or sovereign debt crisis.
we dident have very little growth and austerity.

Interesting points ref. technology .... didn't really think of it in quite the way you put it - maybe, being as old as I am, I am very aware of how much wealthier 'poor' people are today than I was when I was 'poor' 45 years ago.

Then again, I guess I was a better off 'poor' than my grandparents were in the 1800's?

It does stick in my throat when someone says they are poor, yet drink, smoke, and find the funds to have ugly tattoo's and body piercings.

    I share your sentiment there.

used to work in a supermarket on a council estate.
Hate the way governement think to solve child poverty they chuck in more cash benefits as the parents dont always spend it on the child.

The head of asda made me laugh they frequently find nappies and other baby items dumped in the booze ailse as people make the swop.
Have heard people moaning how broke they are whilst having takeaways 2-3times a week.

But there are a lot of people genuinally struggling right now not due to not working some are as cost of livings rising, wages not, lack of savings unexpected bills ours cars a drain but couldent live without it.
Washing machine broke brought a 2nd hand one we buy a lot 2nd hand if we can.I use cloth nappies.
Mt tv in bedrooms probably about 15years old and huge!

apart from cb we support our own kids.
    dontr expect anything

hoping if 2we work hard next few years clear our debts and save we can eventually buy. I dont moan I chose to have a family which meant drop in income wouldent change them for the world they little treasures.

we have freinds relatives who say ahh im really skint.
when we say we skint means sofa diving for change and eating out the freezer. poor means different things to different people.

You could argue anyone who has a drop in living standards would feel as if they poor. right now living standards squeezed by high inflation, no payrises and rising living costs.

if you compare the poor of the past with the poor now its hard to make a comparision as soceity has changed. even in my lifetime technolgy has massivly advanced I couldent have forseen the world wide web when I was 10.

You make very valid points - you are a credit to your children, you have the right ingredients to make a success of yourself and I hope you will do just that.

One thing to bear in mind - the best things in life are free ... and that is so true.

I hear people complaining that they couldn't have a holiday this year, now - that sounds bad, doesn't it? Until you delve a little deeper and what they mean is that they couldn't go to America this year!!!!!

What's wrong with taking the kids to a campsite and camping for £10 a night I ask?!

It seems that the 'poor' point has raised quite significantly on the back of benefits ....... it needs to be re-adjusted IMO.

I'm not sure what you want to see??

I am looking to buy a weekend home on the South Coast, as I have said ....

By showing you these I'm not sure what it proves ... at all ... but, you did ask, so, I'll pander to you this time only as it's pointless:-

This is the crappy end of the market:-

Thank you for the four examples, just to clarify from previous statements. Are you suggesting from anecdotal evidence, Sandbanks properties are SSTC (above asking) before being marketed to a wider audience?

I'm also very pleased you're done well for yourself Mr Ree, but your posts suggest you have little idea how the other half live, which is probably around 98% of the UK to be fair.

Suggesting the crappy end of the market is half a million will just result in your your credibility dropping faster than Thomas Cooks' share prices.
