Generally it's not all about the price of the car as insurance is based on the risk of a claim being made and involves a number of factors:

Corsa, low cost, generally driven by young drivers, higher risk.
Mini, more expensive, will want to keep it nice (will drive it more sensibly), lower risk.

There are probably some low cost cheap cars where the premium won't be 3x the cost of the car but they will need searching for.

I use comparison sites with bogus but nearly right information (as it is all saved and stored forever) to identify who are offering the best premiums and the best cover. I then try them out individually, again with bogus information which does not change the premium (like a house a few doors away with a registration found from Autotrader etc.) and only when I am certain about the insurer I want to use do I check a final time before putting in my real details.

If straight forward, then a cashback site such as Topcashback.co.uk is used as an intermediary.
