Graduation Dress

Options
I don't have the cash to buy a new outfit for graduation so am considering wearing a nice dress. I have two - both with buttons to attach the hood to. Two questions:

1) Will the hood pull up a light-ish summer dress? Will safety pins stop this?
2) Would white/black or black work better with a black gown?

Thanks in advance

People wear absolutely anything and everything under gowns. I wouldn't worry about it. Wear what you feel comfortable. The gown is long enough to provide a decent length over your dress and the hood sits on top of the gown.

    1) Depends on the dress, is it fitted around the bust? If so, probably not... if it's fairly loose then it may do. The hood is quite heavy.

    2) As silvercar said, people wear all sorts ;) One girl I know wore a red dress which worked really well with the black gown. I'd also think carefully about your shoes, they'll be on show especially with a dress (the gown will cover most of the dress apart from a bit at the front) as you'll be walking up/down stairs presumably to collect your certificate.

BTW safety pins were allowed at both my graduations (different unis), it must depend on the uni.
  • Thanks. This will be my third graduation so I know people wear lots of things. The previous two times I've gone with the classic skirt and blouse combo but I'm fed up with the blouse being constantly pulled out of the skirt by the hood!

I've decided to go with the black dress and if the hood does pull it up I'll use safety pins. The belt is very tight so hopefully this will help keep everything in place.

My uni encourages safety pins so people do wonder around with their hood strangling them.

i've done a couple of graduations - one was very laid back while the other had very strict rules on what i could wear. either way, with the gown on, you could hardly see! i wore a suite jacket for one which was more successful than a shirt in not riding up. it's so dependent on the gown - some a really heavy and some are almost comfortable!

    good luck (plus congratulations!)

  • You should find out if there is a dress code, both my graduations at different universities were black/white dress code. Most girls wore black trousers/white shirt or a black dress.
  • Graduation was today wore the dress and it went down well. No pulling up even without safety pins.

I did of course check the dress code before hand.
