timeout on firefox

Hello lovely techie people!
Wondering if you can assist a very frustrated technophobe! I have firefox and it has started getting timeout messages when I try to connect to the internet; not on all sites...
Ive tried downloading latest version and rebooted router etc but to no avail.
Can anyone suggest what I could do to fix it (in VERY basic language please!!)

If you're otherwise getting good response times on the internet, one possible cause is that your ISP's Domain Name Server is overloaded.

You can check this easily by temporarily by setting your network configuration to use an alternative DNS such as OpenDNS.

How you do this depends on which operating system you're using, but it's generally very easy to do.

http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ will tell you if a website is down or if your browser is at fault.

Also try pressing shift + the reload icon to force a reload of the web page
