Need to phone Equifax to check credit report?

I've just tried to check my credit report on Equifax.

I filled in my details and was then asked who my mobile contract was with, and when I took it out.

I answered and then got this message:

We have your information and you’re nearly finished in setting up your service. All we need now is to ask you some final questions. Call us on 0844 335 0550 (Calls will be charged at 5p per min from a BT landline, charges from other networks may vary and from mobile phones cost significantly more) to complete your purchase today!

Is this normal?

There is a chance that I may have answered the question regarding when I took my contract out wrong. It was orignally in my Mum's name and we transfered it into mine at the end of the month - but I can't recall whether my first billing date was that month or the next.

This is the first time I've checked my credit report and the (30 day rolling) contract is the only contract that I've ever had - no finance/loans etc.

They need to be very sure you are the correct person obtaining the credit report.

I tried to get my experian report but it asks for an email address and password i dont remember using.

  • I guess this is normal as when I signed up they asked various questions about 3 of my accounts. if you have only one and you may have answered not as they expected then they need to confirm it is in fact you.

    sounds sensible to me.

  • I tried to get my Credit Report from Equifax and tried their "Instant Online Report" service. Despite trying 2 different (and totally valid) credit or debit cards I got a similar message to the OP above so I called Equifax today.

So much for an Instant Online Report.

What a TOTALLY USELESS organisation they are. I had to answer many questions about my mortgage, credit cards etc. including when did you open the account? Who knows when they opened their credit card account? After all this I still didn't satisfy their stupid checklist so was apparently unable to confirm who I was!! After an argument with their call centre clerk I got nowhere and hung up. It appears that Equifax are totally unregulated and their is no regulatory body to whom you can complain about them.

I now have their address and names of their directors so will be writing direct to complain. I will be glad to hear if anybody else has had the same experience from this shambolic outfit.

Who knows when they opened their credit card account?

Online banking or even paper statements can normally tell you this. I was asked similar questions. Also, I don't think the date needs to be exact, just a ballpark figure (but of course exact is better and will get you through security quicker). I was also asked when I started my account with Orange. In the end I didn't get an instant credit report, but they did email me the next day saying my request had been approved.

I got a freephone number off saynoto0870 for Equifax and called today. The advisor asked me account security questions and said that to verify my identity I needed to email proof of ID. Have emailed a copy of my last mobile bill and counterpart driving license.

Not sure if they wanted card driving license, but didn't really want someone staring at my mug!

    Hopefully this will resolve it.
  • I tried equifax onmline 'instant' report today - what a farce

answered all their questions online - then my debit card wouldnt work - seems as though it has to be a credit card

then got a prompt to phone a 0844 5p a minute number - doesnt give very clear options for supoposedly further verification - finally got through to where I needed to be - 6 minutes into the call and though I had their ref I had to go through all the same questions I had answered online and then more - when that was complete he said and now fax me verification of who you are - so much for instant (and I work away from home so dont have the details on me) - told them not to bother and that they would be better putting on their website what is required rather than wasting my time and most other peoples I should think

    try the next one

btw I used the saynoto0870 but if I haadnt that call would have cost me 65p - what a waste of time and money

Scarydawn, my card wouldnt work at first but then it did accept the details and mine is a debit, not credit. I did have to email ID though, and will find out if it's worked when they get back to me.

    What a faf though.
