New tv guarantee

Hi,
I'm a first time poster to this forum, but I've been a lurker for a little while.
I have a question but I don't know if this is the right place for it I just hope someone can give me some info really?
A friend is just buying a new tv. Has cost her £299 and she has a 1 year guarantee that comes with it. She has been offered by the shop a 3 year guarantee for an extra £100 or 4 monthly payments of £25.
Is it worth getting? I've not seen a copy of the information so I'm not sure what it covers but from what I understand those sorts of things are quite standard?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can offer any advice for us.

For me I never purchase an extended warranty on items below £500.00 as you can simply replace an item for a simular cost as the extended warranty, also for a tv at £300.00 you should get a good few years worth of use from it and if there is a genuine fault it should come to light in the first year of owning it.0

The shop gets a good part of it's profit from the sale of extended warranties. I have never bought one in my life and never would. As has been said the most likely time for failure of an electronic appliance is during the first year. Which would be covered by the manufacturer.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
as above. esp for cheapish items thay are a waste of time.
try places like john lewis for a decent 2-5 yr warranty inc in the item price.Get some gorm.0 -
Another vote for John Lewis. My Sony TV had a 5 year guarantee included in the (competitive) price."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

Consumer sales legislation gives a consumer protection of up to six years for faulty products .. which depends on the product and price paid - and to an extent the "expectation" that the product will last a reasonable time
So, say a Fung-Yip TV for £99 from the market may not be expected to last as long as £3k Sony Bravia from Harrods
Many people still think that after 12 months, a guarantee has run out, but that is not the case0 -
Bought from DSG I guess? Buy from a decent retailer if you really want this. Richer Sounds will sell you a 5 year warranty for 10% of the purchase price-so £29.99 on this price.
Or you can buy an independent policy after the 1 year warranty has expired.
£100 for that is absurd. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I always buy warranties from the maker not the store because the store you get a 12 month warranty anyway so after that the maker covers the restI'm not poor i'm just skint0

Under the sale of goods act if the TV goes phut within 6 months it is up to the retailer to prove their was nothing wrong with it and the problem was caused by the user. After 6 months it is up to the user to prove their was a fault in manufacture or design when they bought it, not allways easy and usually needs a professional report done !You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0
