Nationwide travel insurance comes with hassle

I get this free with my account. But we have to take out family insurance elsewhere to cover the family and riskier activities.
Now Nationwide is saying that if I were to claim, then I have to tell them details of the other insurer!
This just makes life more complicated; and adds to the hassle in settling the claim as ‘this will be shared between the insurers’
There is no point in having this ‘free’ insurance. I’d rather have the extra £5 or so a month in my pocket, thank you!

I agree, its of no use to me at all, and as you point out, just extra hassle!! Just a gimmick to catch the eye really IMO!0

Are you saying that your free insurance only covers yourself and if you go somewhere with your family you have to take out an additional policy? I think that's what your post is saying.
This is because when you have an accident and are covered by two policies then both insurers will try to avoid paying out by getting the other one to pay.0 -

That is exactly what I fear
And the insurer I pay for, would also want to share the claim with Nationwide so I'd be stuck with having to supply double info on policy numbers etc, whichever one I claimed from.
I wonder if all Nationwide holders now realise this pitfall. It was in the revised terms and conditions that I received.0 -
check the 'benefits' you are paying the privilege for, see if can get separately elsewhere..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

I realise this post was from a while back but I just saw it and felt I should reply.
The FlexAccounts cover named account holders within Europe. So if you held a sole account, only you would be covered for free. If you held a joint account, then both the named account holders would be covered for free (regardless of whether travelling individually or together).
A 'family upgrade' is available to insure your spouse/partner and children.
Unless there are issues that you haven't mentioned in your post, it is possible to upgrade your free policy to cover your family.
Bear in mind if you're travelling to a country outside Europe (or one which doesn't border the Med), you'll need to look into the worldwide upgrade.
As far as other insurances are concerned, if you purchased a 'standalone' policy, they would more than likely want your Nationwide insurance details in the event of a claim. So if you came to claim from Nationwide, they would request the details of your other insurance policy.
Hope this helps, but please remember that you need to contact Nationwide for official advice.0 -
Similar problem here - Nationwide did not cover our children. However to add the kids onto the Nationwide policy cost more than getting a separate single trip family insurance policy from another provider - we only go away once a year so no need for annual policies.
Also the Nationwide policy did not cover a couple of risks particular to the type of holiday we were doing, so was fairly worthless for our holiday anyway.
However reading the small print our the policy we took out, it said that they will not pay out if we were covered elsewhere, so we had to contact Nationwide to cancel our policy.
The free cash withdrawals abroad were much more useful.0 -

Good to read that my reaction was not the only one! I contacted the bank weeks ago and told them that if I had to quote 2 policy numbers etc I would prefer the money instead of insurance. I got the most useless reply. It basically told me the terms of the insurance! Not something I was querying! It did not address my query at all. Not a mention. A bog-standard reply thrown up by the computer at the mention of the words ‘travel insurance’, I am sure. Please don’t tell me a human hand was involved as then they are employing the wrong sort altogether.
After that I was cross.
So I have transferred to Santander because of the offer on this site. They say that Santander service is poor. Well not having a query answered by Nationwide is pretty poor.0 -
I don't understand your indignation with Nationwide. You would have exactly the same situation if you took out say AA annual insurance, plus say Ryanair flight insurance.
If the Nationwide policy does not suit your requirements cancel it. It is not compulsory."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
