Central heating wont come on
I think it is a compatibility problem between the "receiver" (ie the box under the boiler) and the "thermostat" ie the box on the wall where I set the temperature I want the house to be). Is there any way I can over ride the "thermostat" and just turn the heating on manually (so I can keep warm today and get an engineer out tomorrow).
This is the thermostat I have
RC Plus British Gas branded
which I believe is this one rebranded

Make/model of boiler?
Try repairing the wireless link using the instructions in the manual. Can you hear the stat clicking when you turn it up/down?
Is the boiler actually working-does it have power to it, does it produce hot water? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

No

Boiler works OK and I have hot water.
I turned the thermostat up to 32 degrees and heating came on, if I turn it below 25 degrees it turns off (yet the display says room is at 18 degrees)0 -

So the wireless link is working ok, but the 'stat has a problem. Suggest you keep it turned up high for now to keep the CH on.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

In case anyone has the same problem, I decided to change the batteries in the thermostat and the heating is now working fine. Even tho I wasnt getting a battery "warning" I thought it might be worth giving it a go (thanks to macman for suggesting it was the thermostat, saved me £50 on the call out)0

The display on mine fades when the batteries are on their last legs.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Wireless technology is the instrument of the devil.
My rear camera cuts in and out due to borderline signal level.
You only find out the wireless door chime is out of battery when you miss the postman.
None of that wireless non-sense for controllng my central heating.
Three wires from the hallway to the wiring centre for me. Actually only two wires are used, but that's progress for you.0 -
Bearing in mind that they came as a set and presumably used to work ok, it is rather unlikely that there suddenly is a compatibility problem.
Turns out it was the receiver box that had the problem. BG unexpectedly turned up to do the service (after cancelling it!) and noticed straight away that the green light was on all the time (and its not supposed to be ... makes ya wonder why they make it green if its not supposed to be on all the time). Anyway he had a spare box in his van so he swapped it for me.
Anyway, for anyone who has the same system as me (installed 4 years ago, before I bought the house) the two boxes "talk" to each other all the time ... and when they "talk" the red "receive" light flickers on and off. The green light should only be on when the thermostat tells the boiler to come on, it should go off when the rooms reach the temperature set on the thermostat.0
