That said, should your implantologist have retired or whatever and there was no problem with the work then getting another implantologist to see you shouldnt be a major problem. The problems exist when the work is failing/failed if that makes sense?0
-
There us a difference between failing ie when the bone is being lost around the implant and it is getting loose and routine maintainance eg when the superstructure ontop of the implant needs recementing or replacing, or routine hygiene appointments.0

I don't place implants but I am quite happy to look after implants placed at practices that I can easily contact to get details of the treatment plan.
My hygienists have knowledge and training in how to look after them, and I feel confident in knowing what early signs to look out for so I can send them onto specialists or back to the placing dentist should I have concerns.
I would be unhappy taking on a mouthful of engineering from vague clinics of practitioners with vague qualifications and obscure implant systems. They might well be recommended to seek out the original dentist. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Thanks for the discussion, and the suggestions from the regular contributors, but may I bring the thread back to what I asked?
So we have 1. Choose a popular system that lots of dentists have the tools for. 2. Choose a dentist who has experience in using the tools.
So does anyone have an opinion on any of the brands? I see a cheaper Korean pattern implant called 'Implantium' is appearing in a loot of the dentists websites. Apart from sounding like it runs the warp core of the Enterprise, has anyone a view?0 -
To reiterate what I said earlier it is the experience and expertise of the implantologist and selection of patient/ site that is key to sucess not the system.
Many implantologists will use or have used a few systems because they all have their advantages and disadvantages in different clinical situations. Some will like a system because of a particular feature that others will dislike it for. The quality and quantity of bone may dictate what implant system is used.
So the person you should be asking about specific implant choices is the one who is going to place it in your mouth. They will tell you their sucess stats with the systems they use.0 -
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy professional life to answer all our questions. One last and I will put it to bed.
Top two or three most popular implant systems with dentists? That way when I move house I don't have to worry about traveling hundreds of miles.0 -
Three of the most popular brands in the uk are straumann, Nobel biocare and Astra tech. These companies offer a wide variety of implants for differing clinical situation. There are newer companies such as implantium ( as you said, from south Korea ) and biohorizons ( from USA ). It is not possible to say which company is best. Many experienced implantologists will use more than one system depending on the individual requirements.
As has been mentioned earlier, choosing a recommended implantologists is more important than choosing an implant system. Overall success rates are very high when an experiences clinician places implants in suitable patients ( non smokers ) with favourable bone volume, etc. I am not aware of any particular system having significantly better results.
The longer established companies will, on the whole, have better long term support and backup which will be important when things go wrong or components need to be replaced.0 -
You need to go abroad, these dentists are talking twaddle, typical of the !!!! covering you get by the British medical profession, the reason they are saying such stuff is because of the price of implants in this country, British dentistry is laughed at abroad, implants are a standard treatment in most of mainland europe.you can't smoke they won't take. As for scrupulous hygiene you need to be able to brush your teeth and and rinse your mouth out. The price of implants in this country means that even those dentists trained in implants, don't get to put hardly any in and that is why you hear tosh like what has been written here, about failure rates they get done all the time on the continent and like everything practise makes perfect. How do you.practice when four implants cost 10- 12 grand here and half that in Germany, and the Germans are the best in the world at engineering, they invented same day implants. Absolute twaddle drumming up trade for their mates sounds like. one of these quack dentists shattered a wisdom tooth in my mouth, I was still pulling it out a month later after he had sewn it up and could not be bothered or was not skilled rough to extract what was left. go to Germany or hungary.0
