Ridiculous P+P request

  • I'm leaning towards not sending it and refunding. I have a bad feeling about it. I would have sent it in a board backed envelope but I bet I'll get bad feedback and low stars, I'm on 100% with 5's across the board at the moment so I'm really annoyed.
Thanks for your advice everyone, you've confirmed what I thought, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being unreasonable.

In my opinion there’s nothing wrong with such a request providing it’s accompanied by something along the lines of “I appreciate that my request for a particular type of postage may incur extra costs. Please could you let me know what this will be prior to posting”. In fact, any such questions should have been put to the seller before even bidding.

I would refund him and block him from bidding when you relist it.
  • He won't pay any extra towards the P+P as he says 'that's how much I won it for'.

    Any suggestions?

Tell him you're sending it in a jiffy bag because 'that's how much you quoted the postage for'
  • To be honest, since I put my collection of car brochures on I seem to have attracted some rather 'special' people... This isn't the only one I've had problems with. I've been selling bits and bobs on ebay for years with no problems but out of the 'car brochure gang' I've had one INR, one SNAD (a page managed to rip itself out between when I posted it and when he got it), and this one, and the rest I haven't had feedback for yet.
I'm pulling the rest of the collection and just going to donate them to local car dealers to put on display. It's not worth the hassle!

I wasn't even going to use a jiffy bag! I use board backed envelopes with an extra bit of cardboard in, but apparently this isn't good enough :(

    What a plank.
I would definitely message back & advise that your p&p quoted was to be sent in a board envelope. You're unable to source wood as requested & if you could it would be a lot more expensive to post.
Offer to cancel the transaction as you're unable to meet his expectations.

Definitely an unreasonable request. I don't think anyone has suggested this may be the buyers own ruse to get out of completing the sale. They may jump at the chance of a mutual cancellation.

On a side note selling anything collectable can attract these kinds of "special people". They have a language and definitions all of their own, for instance what is excellent condition to us is trash to them.
It may sometimes seem like I can't spell, I can, I just can't type

And where are you meant to get this wood from ?

Would mean buying some ply and cutting it to the correct shape, refund and block him

Cancel the transaction. The best that can happen otherwise is you gain 50p.
Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?

I'm sorry you've encountered a few 'something for nothing' buyers. Rather than give the remaining brochures away for nothing, is it worth waiting for a free listing day (assuming you're a private seller)and listing the entire collection as one lot ... for £5 or £10 or whatever?

[My guess is one or two of the car brochure gang will buy the lot hoping to sell on items individually. You can get shot of them in one go and have something to show for it]. :)
