Almost certainly - but how old is your daughter? The bank will likely see her finances as none of your business, so it would be a discussion with her first
  • thanks very much for reply and tc.

yes my daughter is 37 and surely if she gives me permission to site with her and discuss her problem plus dose a bank usally give this sort of an account to the unemployed ,at the time of taking this out my daughter was unemployed and they knew about this?

the signature account fee is £12.50 a month not a week. So anything else is either debt repayment or charges for an unarranged overdraft. Yes, she can have a discussion about changing account.

37? I would DIE if my parent came to the bank with me at 37!! She's an adult, get her to fix it herself!

If your daughter has 'difficulties' managing her financial affairs, and is happy for you to help out, then she needs to appoint you as an 'agent to operate'.

It'll only give you access to her account/account management in branch though, not by phone or online.

It is not the bank's responsibility to check if your daughter is on JSA or not - for all they knew she may have a lump sum due, or a job around the corner. The bank may have been foolish to sell a fee-charging account to somebody who couldn't afford it, but it is not illegal to do so. And being 37, they will have assumed your daughter could make her own financial decisions.

It sounds like there's a lack of clarity around all this - I would suggest talking to your local CAB together with your daughter. CAB are wonderful at untangling financial confusion, and are all volunteers, the service is free.

dont understand ,so any one with jsa can get a overdraft or be overdrawn????
  • I'm afraid you don't automatically get issued with a 'I'm not working bank account', yes my bank can see that my JSA is paid into my account but I can still go overdrawn - it's just a matter of managing your money so you don't run up what you can't pay back. If she can't cope then she needs to open a basic bank account with no access to running up debt & that way she can only spend what she has . . .

Even though I was unemployed the bank still tried to push a charging account on me & the OH, it's a nice little earner for them & it's only when the computer said no they stopped the hard sell.

    Does such an account exist?

Any account offering DD/SO facilities offers the possibility to go overdrawn (due to unpaid item fees for example).

Unless by "basic bank account" you mean a savings account?

True enough, I really meant why pay for the bells & whistles when you're on JSA there is no way that you're going to be able to afford to take advantage of any of the 'perks' this account offers.

If you're going to be racking up bank charges why add the cherry of something with careful research you can find cheaper elsewhere if you really want it . . . .
