printer problems

I have a laptop with Windows 7 and recently bought a new wireless HP printer.
After a struggle I got it set up and it worked.... sort of.
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
After several hours today I've established:
* the printer screen shows "connected"
* the laptop also shows the printer as "connected"
* pressing "print" from Word /Excel (starter) error message "printer not found" or printer not connected.
After further trials I find I can print perfectly from within Internet Explorer, and if I then go to Word/Excel, they will print.
Time passes (working on document), and again Word will not print. Go to Explorer, print, go back to Word, print!
It seems to me that the printer is fine, the wireless network is fine, the laptop connection is fine, but Office Starter is causing problems
a) is this likely/possible?
b) what else can I do/check?

I had these problems trying to connect my HP printer when I got my new HP desktop with Windows 7. This was a few months ago, it never worked using wireless network and was also very iffy as to whether it would regognise the USB connection. I gave up last weekend and bought a Canon - it is wonderful, was easy to connect, the printe - the wireless - the computer all recognised each other and I love it.0
