Washing machine waste smelling??

Help!!!

Our washing machine is letting off a foul stench when it is running or not used for a couple of days. The washing itself does not smell. When it is in use water also bubbles up through the kitchen sink plug hole.

The machine is new (3 months old) but we started to have the same issue before we got rid of our old machine. The dishwasher shares the same waste but does not cause any problem.

Have tried all the usual cleaning of the traps and heavy duty drain unblocker.

Try a) a hot wash with a bottle of vinegar [no detergents]; b) running a 60deg wash relatively often; c) cleaning out the detergent drawer; d) making sure there's no black mould in the rubber door seals, particularly around the bottom where the water collects; e) leaving the drawer and door slightly ajar when not in use; f) using powder instead of liquid detergents.

Many smells in washing machines are as a result of using liquid detergents and only running 30deg washes - don't kill the bacteria.
  • Perhaps get the drain checked? If it is backfilling, don't think thats a good sign.

The waste water should not be coming back up into your sink.
As you have checked the trap, have a look outside to see if the pipe is draining freely.

i dont like using the sink waste pipe for the WM waste for that very reason.
its hard to get a big flow out. esp if any other waste water is present.
much better to let the WM have its own standing pipe and waste pipe.

also make sure the WM flexi pipe is high enough, before it exits via any waste pipe.
sometimes this means tying the pipe up under a sink/worktop.
    Get some gorm.

It sounds like your drain needs unblocking, also ensure your waste pipe is high enough as to not allow ebbing back into the washing machine.

If its the washing machine pump, it could just be a simple case of cleaning the filter or the pump out, to ensure a nice healthy flow of waste leaving the pipe efficiently enough to empty properly.

I had the same problem in the past and was shocked when I took apart the washing machine waste pipe and cleaned it through. I tied a weight onto string, dropped the weight/string through the pipe and then tied a cloth onto it and pulled it back through. Was full of gunk.
I also now run a 95 degree wash once a month with soda crystals.
