How to prove contents insurance if claimed?

I have a home content insurance but wonder how do I claim (just in the worst case)!
What proof usually I have to show them that a particular item was really on in my home when someone broke into my house.
I think purchase receipts should serve the purpose but unfortunately I did not keep receipts of all items (especially clothes and minor items). I only kept receipt of electronics items (laptop, camcorder etc.).
Will it be of any good if I take photographs of the items in my home? Because I know if I ever have to claim, insurance company will try their best not to compensate me what I lost!

Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

It is mostly taken on trust, insurers know what the average claim is for a burglary, flooding etc and as long as you fit within the expected number and size of claims then they wouldnt normally ask for receipts etc.
If you have anything that is unusually expensive then photos and receipts will help, although your policy will have asked you to specify this in which case valuations/receipts will be required.I am a director of Torquil Clark Life Insurance (formerly Life Policies Direct), a specialist protection broker.
