which laptop? ASUS or HP Pavillion

Options
I have narrowed my choice down to ASUS N55SF S2276V or HP Pavillion dv6-6b50sa. Both similar spec with 6gb memory 500gb hard drive in ASUS or 750gb in HP and both intel core i5 with the ASUS being 2330m and the HP 2430M. So there is not a lot in the spec and both are £699.99. Which brand would be considered the most reliable/better quality please. I am not very technical and any advice on these two would be helpful.

Asus. HP Compaq consumer grade laptop build quality has been quite shocking for the past few years.
  • Thanks for the responses. I shall be using it mainly for storing photos and music, e mailing and web browsing. I have a 5 year old lenovo at present which has been great but is at the end of its life - very very slow! I don't like the new rough touchpad on the new lenovos which is the only reason I am not staying loyal to the brand. I would like to have some future proofing for the next few years hence I am probably looking at something beefier than actually need right now. I would also like something that looks attractive and both these are quite stylish in my opinion.

read the speedup sticky above, there is no need for it to be slow.

Have you seen the touchpad on some of the hp's, lumpy touchpads seem to be the fashion, more style over substance.

£700 is a little ott for storing photo's, future proofing is very wasteful financially, you could spend £350 and get a better laptop for £350 in 5 years time.

Thanks for your advice. Sadly, not only is my Lenovo slow but runs XP and has very few letters still showing on the keyboard (worn off - must be very heavy handed) so I really do need to splash out on a new one. You are no doubt right that I could spend less and get something more than adequate for my short/med term needs. I am just very inexperienced with IT and want to make sure I get something of decent quality and something quite fast as I am not known for my patience :). I am also been a bit of a girl and want something 'pretty'.

The link to the survey is much appreciated and results quite compelling.

In answer to your post ASUS.

If you don't want to go down the speed up/ refurb route because you want to change I am with closed on buying new.

For what you are looking for I am sure a second generation i3 or better with 500Gb and 4Gb RAM would more than meet your needs for half price or less.

If you are using it for photo storage I would also consider a nice 1TB external hard drive for backup storage too.
