Car Tyres - which ones to get...??

Any tyre experts out there??

I need to get two new tyres (front). Thought it would be easy... then the problem of 'choice' arose!!

Have old (1999) VW Polo, only use it 5 times a week for short/local drives. Only occasional long distances. So mileage not a big issue.

I've called a few local garages and have been given quotes for Sava (£42 each) and Prestivo (£50 each). Are these any good? Or would it be worth spending a bit much (quoted £65 each for Continental)? To add to my confusion, just had a look at Halfords online and they've got Avon, Firestone, Goodride, Evergreen and Federal all somewhere between £47 - £55.

Have limited budget, but would rather spend a little more if worth it. Out of the tyres mentioned above, any considered better than the others or are they all about the same quality?

(Was originally thinking of second hand tyres... but worried I'll be given a rubbish set: false economy).

Any advice from anyone in the know welcome! Thank-you!

We bought Continental Eco 3 for my car (Polo), they are one of the best buy tyres and given that is the only thing between you and the road (so my OH keeps telling me) he wanted something good. We bought them from https://www.tyreshopper.co.uk and got them fitted locally for around £60

    Hope that helps

Costco currently have 20% off their fully fitted tyres, however the offer expires tomorrow (Sun 20th Nov). They stock Michelin and Continental. I've just picked up a set of Michelin Pilot Exalto 2's for £56 per tyre fully fitted. The cheapest I could find elsewhere on the internet is around £70 per tyre fitted, so a complete bargain.

I can't comment on tyre qualities as I'm no expert, but I always get the best tyres I can for any car I have. Whilst, it probably makes no noticeable difference 99.9% of the time, it's that one time when you need to do an emergency stop, go through a deep puddle on the motorway or need to swerve to avoid an accident that it really matters.

All budget tyres sold in the UK are to a satisfactory standard, I've never had a problem with them.

Stopping distance, for example, may be a little longer but then again some drivers have worse attention spans than others so that can negate that.

Also, I once bought 4 michelins and within a month I had two punctures that unfortunately couldn't be repaired.

Swings and roundabouts but I'll continue with a good budget tyre.
  • If you are not bothered about what tyres you get just go to a local scrapyard/breakers and pick a couple up, most of these places have a tyre yard now so will even change them for you dont pay any more then £10 each and pick the ones with the most tread left on.
  • Have a look at these guys, google: etyres

They are the cheapest for the tyres on my car across all brands

And you'll stand more of a chance of going in a straight line at a corner in the wet....

To the OP...Kumho are a good fairly cheap tyre.

Kumho, a korean tyre company with a lot of factories in china. You ever used them?

    not good advice.
  • I had a long discussion with a local tyre depot this week and finally took their advice to get Avon tyres. I double checked internet prices when I got home and all were more expensive than I had paid, thankfully! Bit early for me to say if Avon are any good as only had them 2 days but noticed a significant reduction in road noise.

Avon are a good tyre, but again, normally made in china now. (If you want to check, it's marked on the sidewall)
China makes an awful lot of tyres now.

My local tyre place is cheaper than the online stores.

Unless the big chains have a sale on your specific tyre then they usually wont be close on price.

    As always shop around.
