    Hmm, I don't *think* so.

The main incoming wiring comes in at the top of the box. The outgoing extension wiring appears to be connected to the removable socket in the line box. (Ignore the dust!)

The router is now plugged into the main socket through the microfilter (since the extension wiring went dead after preliminary investigations) but drops out periodically too. I'm not happy but hopefully it will be sorted out soon. Plusnet have confirmed there's a fault on the line and referred it to (I assume) BT openreach.
  • Looking at your photos and comment about extensions going dead after you had removed the front panel.

I would say you have got a poor connection on the extension wiring connected to the front panel. They are insulation displacement connectors and need to be reinserted. You can buy a cheap plastic tool from a DIY shop (some people say use a small screwdriver but you should not really as that may be why you have a poor connection now). Then pull out the wires, noting where they go! and reinsert them with the tool, no need to strip the insulation.

Do not let Openreach do anything to the dead extension or they will probably charge you, better not to tell them at all, or even better reconnect the wiring before they come.

    Thanks, nbg.

Well, Openreach came unexpectedly at 825 this morning! After lots of internal and external testing, he concluded that it was a corroded connection on the wire from the pole, so they have put a new wire and line box in, and connected the extension in too. No charge and I'm hoping it's all resolved now.

Everyone's advice is really appreciated, thanks very much.
