Pc bits gone bang.

I sold my old motherboard, Fan, CPU, Graphics card, memory through Ebay, and I can guarantee it was all working. The buyer recieved it, has stated that it started up, he was installing windows and was halfway through, and then it stopped. Turned out the CPU cooler wasn't seated right, and he has stated that he didn't touch it. I thought it was commonplace to check all connections & seating before starting up? It was securely packed with Bubblewrap, etc. His "mate at PCworld" (amazing how many there are!) said that the cpu cooler wasn't sitting right, which fried the CPU. Can he get me for a refund, even though he stated this all?

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
But it did work - he ws installing stuff with it which he wouldn't have been able to do if you had sold him a non-working item. I don't think he's entitled to a refund.

Indeed they do. But stand your ground. You sold an item that was working when dispatched and of course things can move in transit etc.

You say that you sold all of the components - I assume that they weren't assembled at the time of postage (I would hope not). If so I would say that the problem may be that the buyer was a numptie and made a mistake when putting them together. There really are too many things that he could have done wrong with for you to take responsibility and refund him straight off.

In any case, you refunding him won't do you any favours - let him make a dispute if he wants and then paypal will take your money if you lose anyway. Hopefully you'll win and keep the money that rightfully should be yours.

Out of curiosity, what is your returns policy? It won't do you much good if you say you will accept returns if something is faulty!

I definity wouldnt refund. You sold it as working and he recieved it working end of.
  • Its amazing how long a cpu will last without a hsf - let alone one that is installed 'incorectly'. Also its quite often a pain in the !!! to get them off. He's probably bought some fried cpu and wants to return that. Make him send you a pic of the fried cpu and tell him that you have a record of the serial no. and see what his response is.
