Phone dead but broadband working??

Hi Folks,

Yesterday I noticed that my telephone was dead (BT Landline) but the broadband was working, no problem.

I carried out the basic checks like unscrewing the socket and inserting the phone directly into BT Socket. Also have tried different phones and they are all dead.

Looks like I am going to have to report the problem to BT. However, was just wondering if there is anything I have missed.

What I cannot understand is how come the broadband is working and I have no problem accessing the internet but the phones are dead?

Has anyone had a problem like this before? Or can anyone provide any insight in to what might be going on.

Thanks for your help.

The handset may have become faulty. Try another handset or try another cable from the socket to the phone. If you call BT out and they find it is the handset they will charge you.

BT however will go through troubleshooting with you over the phone for free.

Unlike happy I can see you have tried different phones.

Is the line dead both ways, ie no dial tone and unable to receive calls.
Have you tried a different filter?

When the line gets to the telephone exchange it splits 2 ways, one to the broadband and one to the switching side. It is possible that it is an exchange fault after the split.

By testing in the test socket and with different phones I think you have effectively proved your equipment/wiring OK.

Hi OP, have a look at your speed, if its half what it usually is then chances are one of the legs has dropped off your connection.
This happened to me a few weeks ago, I used the BT online checker, when that failed they sent out an Openreach engineer out within a couple of days to fix it.

But try a known good handset first.

I have tried three different phones now and they are all dead.

Thanks for explanation. I cannot get incoming calls or make outgoing ones. I have tried different filters. I am thinking your "exchange fault" is the most likely explanation.

My broadband speed has not dropped at all. I had not heard of the BT on-line checker. I had better look in to it.

    Thanks again to all.

It's quite common to lose the voice side and retain the data side. Either way, your first call is to BT, as you have both services with them.

Many thanks, penrhyn. I have just carried out the check and got the following message; "We are carrying out more tests to determine if a fault is present".

They have given me a reference number and will contact me when they have done the checks.

Thanks to all for your very helpful advice.

Basically, when your phoneline enters the exchange it splits, one leg going to your ISP provider & the other voice side going to whoever supplies your phone,it may be that the phone side is faulty in the exchange. However it could also be caused by a faulty phone connection in your home or outside.Broadband works at a 'high frequency' so it may still jump any break in the wire/connections.

Hellospacer.gifWe've had a look at your problem and think we can fix it by the end of 15/4/2011.spacer.gifWe'll send you any news by Email.spacer.gifTo find out how we're getting on, go to www.bt.com/fault. You can also change your contact details and choose how you'd like any updates here.spacer.gifPlease note: we'll provide a working service up to and including the main socket in your house. If your problem isn't with your BT service, you might need to pay a £130.00 repair charge. So it's worth checking your own equipment before the visit and cancelling the visit if you fix things.spacer.gifFor advice on how to check your equipment, including a short video on the checks being made, go to www.bt.com/faults

PS They did! The man arrived with his TDR, fault was 1Km up the road by the pub.
