If you buy them at the supermarket they're very expensive, but at the Indian food shops I've been too they're pretty cheap.
As for microwaving, you'll need a good microwave that doesn't generate hot spots or it will just fail to cook evenly, leaving uncooked areas and burning others. The trend now is towards very cheap microwaves, which usually work acceptably, but this is one thing where you will notice the difference.0
