Can I install a 8.5K electric shower ?

Options
Hi all.

I currently have fitted a 7K shower, which needs to be replaced.
It is on a 30 amp breaker switch.

Is it possible to fit a new replacement 8.5K electric shower without changing all the wiring ?

Many Thanks

You'd certainly need to increase size of protective device fuse/mcb/rcd to 40 amp and cabling would need to be at least 10mm.

A thought, hasn't new legisation been passed re electrics. I am trained as an electrician (to the 15th edition - now outdated) but am unsure even if I am allowed to work on my house

    Well, 240 Volts x 30 Amps = 7200 Watts = 7.2 KW

So you will at least need to change the breaker

Whether the wiring is up to the job is difficult to say - depends on the cross-section of the cores usually.
Why pay more than you have to?
  • If you're going to change the circuit, you may as well fit a 10.8kW shower. 8.5kW is hardly worth changing for.
