Telephone scam warning !!!

** Maybe a mod could move this to a better place by the end of today but I thought this was worth warning my fellow compers **

Just got a phonecall from "Microsoft Windows Services" saying that they have been getting serious errors coming from my laptop and that I was being hacked which could result in my laptop conking out at any time. I was not to worry as their technician could correct this for me.

Ah but hold on a minute you are not under warranty but if you pay us £80 to extend your warranty for 10 years then we will proceed to fix the problem.

I didn't fall for it mainly because I am a tight a**e :o and could probably fix it myself. However when I googled the telephone number 02081232615 I found it was a scam.

It was very convincing involving alot of technical jiggery pokery which would have been so easy to fall for !!

A couple of threads a day on here covering this.
I was reading one from today only a few minutes ago
  • I know of a gent that fell for this, he is in his early 70's and they took £700 out of his bank account and proceeded to take a further £500 3 days later but we managed to get it stopped by the bank, but it wasn't easy the bank was really unhelpful. We had to cancel everything including his account and re-open one with new details. It has been going on for the past 5 months and banks are aware of it now. so YES be very vigilant, they are very persuasive.

yeah I've had this one too, I messed about for a bit as they asked me to do something to the pc so I just said things like "ok, how do I get to the start menu? the mouse - which bit's that?" before after about 15 minutes saying "I'm not sure how you got an error message from it as it doesnt have the internet" - eventually he hung up on me!

I had never heard of it before but you are right, it's over on the techie forum.

If I have any spare time after my comping:rotfl: I must stray over there and keep up to date.

A friend got caught out on this, they managed to get remote access to her laptop, and I spent 4 days sorting the mess out for her. They have since tried calling my Mil 4 times now, last call I took the man went through all the instruction to get error messages up etc, I was sitting on the sofa and pretended to do what I was being told. After he finished he said the list of error messages was really long.
That's when I started laughing as I was no where near the pc, he got angry and then blew bubble sounds down the phone, was quite funny at the time, he was sent away with a flea in his ear iygwim.

Please let everyone know about this, 6 people in Mil's street have had calls since last Tuesday.
Think it's about time the comping fairy remembered where I am! lol

I got a call about a month ago was sure it was a scam but he had all the talk so asked him to phone back as I had to go out (then googled it), he did ring back and my techy ds spent about 25 mins on the phone to him leading him on then said I hope you don't mind but the police are just joing this conference call and the phone went dead in seconds. But it didn't stop them so I just tell them that I have a Mac computer to get rid of them, apparently they just ring anyone as 99% of users use windows.
