switch before or after move?

Options
I am moving house (renting). I have looked on a comparison website and found that I can get a better deal on electricity from a different supplier and get £30 cashback for doing so (the property doesn't have gas).

(1) Would I be better off telling my current supplier that I'm moving home, let them do the switchover and then switch to the new supplier in a month or so to get the £30 cashback?

(2) Or would I be better off terminating my account with my current supplier when I move and starting a new account with the new supplier straight away?

Seems to me that option 1 is better but are there any hidden nasties that I haven't thought of??

Any feedback gratefully received! :)

    Neither are correct.

You MUST close your account at your old property, read the meter on your last day and ring them to close the account. Eventually you will get a final bill from them so tell them your new address for that.

When you move in your new property you MUST register with the supplier already supplying that property. So on day one take the opening meter reading and ring them giving all of your details.

You are then free to switch to any supplier of your choice and get any cashback going. The switch will take about 4-6 weeks so you will use electric with the current supplier until then and subsequently get a final bill from them.
  • Hahaha, thank you notbritishgas, I will now close down my account with British Gas and tell them that I won't need their services at the new property. :)
