Vasectomy - NHS

Options
Currently aged 33 and due to get married early next year, both of us have no children and more importantly do not want any - have felt this way since 14, partner is also 100% sure.

I know it can be done private with cost of £500 upwards but how easy would it be to get it done on the NHS or will I have to wait months and "jump through hoops" to convince them I do not want children?

Thanks.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

  • it is quite hard (no pun intended) on the nhs, my husband (we have 2 young children) was talked out of having it done incase something happened to our children etc etc. It did scare us though we don't want more children. i think they would be very reluctant, so you will need to stand your ground and make 100 percent sure because a reversal is not as easy as people imagine. my fil is after one much to the horror of my dh
  • £500 - where did you get that figure from?
Husband had his done for £200 privately. He got referred from the GP, waiting list was too long and we have 3 kids.

We had a totally different experience.

Our girls were about 1 & 3 when we decided to see our GP about it. (the are 12 & 14 now)

After a chat with our GP we got referred to a clinic to have it done as there was a long wait at the hospital. It was still done through the NHS. We waited about 4-6 weeks for the appointment. We both had to go. We got asked all the expected 'what if' questions & the doc said my husband could have it done. He looked in his diary & had a cancellation for the following morning so thats when it was done!!

The doc even asked if I wanted to watch! I didn't nerv0004.gif
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

My OH and I went to the Drs a couple of weeks ago to ask about this. The GP mentioned the usual 'what if's' and we both said a resounding 'No' to any more children. He has referred us to the local hospital, but says there is even a local village clinic that could accommodate us, and told us to expect to wait only a matter of weeks.

A friend of our's did the same last year, her OH got a phone call offering a cancellation less than a month after going to GP, expecting a long waiting list. By the way, she was offered to watch, and did! I am fully intending to watch, and have promised my OH a running commentary. I feel it's only fair after the : 'I can see the head!', 'here comes the baby!' commentary we have to put up with during birth. I even offered to video it, but he's declined.

I have just had it done by Marie Stopes cost £395, and have just got the results that I am now a Jaffa :j http://www.mariestopes.org.uk/uk/vasectomy.htm
Service was excellent, I didnt try the GP/NHS route, as I dont have any kids, and after hearing a number of horror stories on here regarding Flippant GPs questioning you over your decision.
Marie Stopes was easy, they asked "are you sure you dont want kids" say yes and your whipped off for your procedure, going private was worth every penny to me.

Dh had his 2 weeks ago on the NHS. I think it was a 12 weeks waiting list but he got a cancellation so only a 2 month wait. Was asked all the what if questions but we had already discussed all of that and decided to go ahead.
We looked into private and it seems to be £400 most places. Google vasectomy and there are lots of clinics throughout the UK.

    Hi
My husband had a vasectomy when he was 30 ( we have two children) on the NHS. No problems at all, everything went smoothly and he did not feel that he had to justify himself regarding his decision.

  • My husband was on the NHS waiting list for a couple of months last year. Unfortunately (or not) we fell pregnant during that time, but he did have the op just before Christmas. New baby due in late April.
