Horsey update....
Myself and OH took DD to meet the horse this morning. We spent several hours with him, observing him in the stable, his behaviour when being tacked up etc, observed him being put through his paces in the paddock etc. After this DD spent quite a while riding him, both in the paddock and on the road, then spent time with him in the stable and yard, and watching him with the other horses etc.
He is a lovely horse and has quite a calm temperament.DD was able to handle him fine. She will be going several more times over the week to ride him and get to know him, then if all goes well we have a stable to move him to in a week's time. This also gives time for all the medical checks etc, and to get the insurance set up.he is up to date with vacs, dental, footcare and worming so will just be added to the programmes running at the stable to keep him updated and healthy.
As he is still really only a youngster we have arranged for DD to have long term one to one regular schooling with him at the stable, in addition to the time she will be spending alone with him.Hopefully that will help prevent them both developing any bad habits, and a couple of years down the line she will have a cracking little horse.
meanwhile i know where we will be spending the day tomorrow:D

need to get back into the saddle............
ive had basically a year off riding ( too busy with sons horses and competitions), just the occasional hack once a fortnight
Now i seem to have filled my time in other ways.......hubbie bought me a nice 17.2hh beastie over a year ago that i backed and then have done very little with.
how on earth can i get motivated and get back into the routine of riding most days , when i always seem to be mucking out/filling haynets/shopping and doing housework(oh and i get to go to work 30 hours a week to for fun)
I used to fit it all in, but can you get outa the habit of riding?
Any suggestions greatfully recieved!0 -
Grrrr. Its been years since I've ridden and its just too expensive where I live at the moment.
Plus, BF won't even contemplate the idea of going into the Peak for a horse trek.
It was nice to read this thread and hope everything goes well with the new horse (goes back to staring longingly out the window at the horses in a nearby field, maybe one day). How long til pay day?

I'll come! I really wanna get back on a horse this year, I haven't ridden in almost 10yrs. My Aunt has a pony but he's 31 years old & 13.2hh lol & I think he'd probably collapse if ridden! Us MSE'ers should go on a group riding holiday & save money for booking as a group lmao0 -
my post comes a bit late as I've just returned from holiday but wanted to say that my parents bought me my first pony when I was 11 purely to give me an interest and keep me off the streets and getting involved with the wrong sort of people - it worked and I spent every spare moment with my pony and didn't get into any trouble
.
I'm in my 30's now and still have my own horse. I think you can make it as cheap or as expensive as you want really. Of course you will need to pay for the basics such as stabling, shoeing, worming etc but you dont need to have the most expensive rugs or kit.
I'm in Surrey and my horse is on DIY livery. We pay £120 per month for our stable and grazing. Hay is £3.60 per bale and shavings are £5.25 per bale. Of course you'd have to think about holiday cover if you were to go away but it's no different to having a dog, just needs a bit of planning.
I think you should go for it - I'm certainly glad my parents did
Just to add:
Vaccinations - about £40-60 each year (this includes the vet's call out fee, however you can cut costs if you share a vet visit).
Shoes - I have mine done every 8 weeks at a cost of £55. I don't know anyone who has their horse done every 4 weeks! - 6 to 8 is usual.
Worming - this varies on the worm programme you follow but it's not expensive
Dentist - mine is done every 6 months at £30 a time but this could be done yearly.
These are the yearly necessities. Everything else spent is dependent on the price you want to pay, as I said earlier, ie rugs, tack etc. I know some people have have heaps of rugs but a good quality winter turnout and stable rug will suffice, however if your pony is hardy with a good coat then it wont need rugging.
Just ask if you need any more help0 -

Sign me up!
I had a lovely Section D mare when I was growing up, but stopped riding 8 years ago when I left home and my stepmum turned psycho on me
I've been riding a couple of times since and now that we're about to move into the country I'd love to get back into it, but don't know where to start!0 -
OOhhhh Sec D, I've got one of them. Soooo friendly and affectionate but definately has a mind of her own. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun but remember be firm and be consistent (you know, like training dogs and children).
Buy a weight tape and keep an eye on the tummy, mine just has to look at a field of grass and she puts on weight.
Have fun0
