Housing Benefit and housing assoc housing

Asking for a friend, he has had to move back to his mums. She has a 2 bed house through the housing assoc and has been there approx 20 years, my friend is 31.
In Jan I heard they are cutting housing benefit so if you have a house bigger than you need you have to move out or find the extra rent.
Will this apply to him? or is it just for LHA?
Would they class his mum as needing a 2 bed house as she has her son living there?

if it's him and his mum then they need a 2 bedroom house but only one person living there will be able to claim the housing benefit.Overactively underachieving for almost half a century0

I am aware that there are plans to change housing benefit for social housing benefits in the future so that there will be a modest deduction for unoccupied bedrooms. I don't know when this will come in. This is different from many of the planned changes for LHA that come in this and next year.
An overview of LHA changes (which don't apply to social housing tenants) is located here, plus a link to benefit and HB calculators.

As a HB claimant, she is obliged to notify the DWP and local council of any changes in circumstances, which will cover a non-dependent moving into the household, so HB and council tax can be adjusted. There can be deductions made to HB for a social housing tenant when there are non-dependents in the property. This is completely different from proposals to decrease HB for under occupied properties. The deductions depend on the age, status and income of the new occupant.
Is the son in employment, full time education or on benefits, how old are they? Here is info on the many types of deduction and the sum deducted. If it applies, the son is expected to pay the shortfall to the parent.

and the mum wont be able to claim her 25% CT discount once someone else moves in.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Any benefit entitlement his mother loses should be made up by the son, regardless of benefit entitlement!
Does your "friend" really think that the state will keep his mother, and him, rent free? Why can't he make up any loss from the move in?

Perhaps you should re read the OP's post.
They never asked about being kept rent free or if the state would keep their friends mother.
The son and mother may both be working at the moment and are only asking about future entitlements.0 -

See, I don't see it like that.
I see a concern about a guy moving in with his mother and worried about benefit cuts and if it will apply (esp since its 2 bed and the mum needs just one).
I pointed out that since someone else is living there now, they can contribute to the rent and help make-up any loss.
Guess I hit a nerve with baza? The suggestion that someone pays their way when they can.... shocking....

But the OP never said anything about not paying their way or wanting their rent paid did they.See, I don't see it like that.

They asked if housing benefit would be cut for a woman living in a 2 bed house on her own when the new rules come into force.
Oh, i get ALL my rent and council tax paid thanks. We also have 2 adult children who live with us and both work but due to my wifes DLA there are no non dependant deductions made so we get FULL WHACK.
Happier now

He does not work at the moment, they have informed the council and have had the deductions for him living there.
I think their main concern is-
Will his mum have to move? or will they keep the 2 bed room house as he is living there?0 -

No, the OP asked if they had to move out or find extra rent.
If you scroll back up you will see this.

Think I would rather not be disabled (or see a loved one disabled). Think I would rather teach my kids to contribute and not have a disabled mother/wife.
I am happier now actually! I am lucky! Thanks.

The mum will not have to move if the son is living there and even if the son wasn't living their she probably wouldn't have to move although she might have to pay a higher rent.
Does that make sense?Overactively underachieving for almost half a century0
