Mascara

Looking for a nice light mascara that doesnt clump or thicken - any suggestions ? Mine makes me look like miss piggy!

  • May I suggest Clinique High Gloss? It doesn't flake or smudge, doesn't clump and doesn't dry up. One lasts me about a year and i use it every day. If you want something "lighter" see if it comes in brown or brown/black.

They all do! (clump lashes) if you use them incorrectly or don't replace them after about 2 months use (some reports say 6 weeks max!)

"Pumping" your mascara in its tube will cause it to partially dry inside and this will mean it thickens and you get clumps and an uneven coverage.

When you take out the brush, roll it onto a flat tissue to get rid of most clumps on the brush and dab the top with a tissue to remove the big splodge at the top. Don't get lazy and wipe the tip on the edge of the rim where the brush pot is as this will also cause clumps to form!

I'd say its a pretty personal thing (chosing a mascara) some people prefer more coverage or legnth or curl or whatever then others. I'd recommend Max Factor (but only the purple coloured tube, the others don't do anything for me!) but even then I'd say the brush was too fat and always ends up with me needing to carefully clean up my upper eye -no good if you apply eyeshadow! I did like that it is easy to remove though, no real scrubbing required.

Boots No.7 is also OK (well, some are- the square brush version is terrible!) but I don't thik they do much to add any volume or curl.

Clinique used to be my favorite but I think they must have changed their formula as now all I get are flakes on my under eye halfway through the day. That never used to happen. I get the same thing happening with Bojours.

Chanel (if you can get hold of this- v.v. expensive!!) is fantastic but again, pricey!

Diorshow is excellent for a dark and bold coverage but takes a small army to remove so get a decent eye makeup remover (Chanel, Clinique, Dior or similar- No.7 doesn't come close to those brands. Johnsons is another decent cheap buy but comparible with Boots No.7, which for me isn't as good as the first three I'd mentioned.)

Rimmel has a few 'nice' mascaras, they do a fair job and are worth the price. I found them sort of painful/scratchy to apply as the wand isn't soft enough but they do a good job to evenly cover and separate lashes. Just nothing 'wow' but good for an overall day look. (Check out the 'sexy curves' range they have).

Bodyshop is OK, again nothing really 'wow' but its OK for most people. May need to comb your lashes before applying though (with a lash comb). I'd put Mac's own mascaras in the same category as these, again: may need a decent eye makeup remover!

Ok many thanks, have noted all of these (;)) and will try them. I don't want the thick glam look just sleek and smooth and clean lashes. Thank you both :)

models own volume mascara- very natural, no clumping, separates lashes well.
or bourjois volume glamour- i actually find this gets better with time, sometimes i keep them for six months+ for when i want a very natural fanned out lash look.

I use Maybelline Full & Soft in Soft Black. I get it from eBay for about £3 - £4.

Tesco's Barbara Daly in dark brown.

I use all of the top end make-up brands but this mascara is the best one so far.

My friend is a make-up artist and suggested this particular one, and stipulated I should get the dark brown.

She said that as we ladies get older we should ditch black as it's too harsh, and can enhance shadows and bags under the eyes.:o

But this colour is great as it isn't too brown and even when I wear grey/black shadow, it looks fantastic.

Oh thank you, this is great. I have black lashes and eyebrows doodoot, but just recently had the colour all cut out of my hair and it's shades of grey now. It has changed my whole face and skin tone and I need to change all my make up now. I wouldn't have thought of dark brown ever but will try this from now on, instead of black. TY all !
  • Try Superdrugs 2True Volumptious or Incredilash - they are ace! Only £1.99 each or were on 3 for 2 when I got them. Totall bargain - doesnt thicken or clump just really defines lashes. Super for everyday wear - have had lots of compliments!! xx
