Soundcard failure?

I've had repeated problems with losing sound on my laptop, for the past few months. I've corrected it by putting it into stand-by mode, then re-starting, which seemed to have "resolved" the problem.
Now it doesn't! Any ideas? Is the sound card the problem? It's a basic Dell laptop about 7 years old,
Thanks for the help.

sound will be a chip on the mobo....download the latest drivers for it and go from there......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Sorry guys, didn't explain that very well!
I run a pair of small, external speakers from the headphone socket on my laptop. I then connect them to a sub-woofer, so get a decent sound. For the last 6-8 months, I've noticed that the all speakers will cut out at very noisy sounds: bangs, explosions, etc, in films.
I've learned to compensate for this by reducing the volume input on the volume control panel of my laptop, or reducing the input sound on sites like youtube. Then I increase the volume on the speakers to compensate.
When the speakers "short out", or whatever it is they do, I read online to put the pc into stand-by mode for a short while and the speakers reset themselves. It has done that so far, and they were back this morning. Obviously I was too impatient last night.
So I seem to have resolved my own problem. I'll start a new thread for recommendations for new computer speakers!
Thanks for reading, guys. Sorry it's long. Gone from one extreme to the other!0
