Can you opt-out of Barclaycard Securecode?

Options
I'm trying to put through a transaction and the website is insisting that I activate Securecode. Is there any way to opt-out?

Is there not an option to activate later? But really, why would you want to opt out?

No, the only option is "Activate".

Because I can never remember the password, I don't see it as being particularly secure, and it is just a way of moving the liability onto me.

Not to mention the ridiculously low maximum character limit. All my "usual passwords" are too long to enter and I refuse to create another one that is less secure than any of my normal passwords, just because they implement a totally illogical and unnecessary character limit.

I completely agree with every word of this, but unfortunately there is no way to opt-out. Not that I've found, anyway. You can try only purchasing from sites that don't use these stupid systems, but those are getting fewer and further between now.

When these systems first came out, you were given the option to defer it twice before it forced you to register. I didn't even get the defer option with my new Barclaycard, activated last week :(

I've sent a secure message to Barclaycard asking how to opt out. I don't hold out much hope though.
  • If its similar to MBNA you can ask for a character based secure code where majority of the times it will automatically process unless something looks suspicious.

Not heard about that. I'll investigate, thanks!

I sent a secure message to Barclaycard. They replied saying they can't handle my query over email. Well that was a waste of time then. It seems the system is pointless because no matter what you ask you get an email back saying to call them

So I called them up today. It's not possible to disable Barclaycard Secure. What a load of crap.

Apart from the valid points about the character lengths of the password required, I don't see why people get so hot under the collar about securecode etc. An 8 character "PIN" is reasonably secure (more so than your cashcard PIN), and provided that you don't tell anyone the passcode nor have a readily guessable one, why should you be fearful about using it? Barclaycard can only deny their responsibilities as a card issuer if you compromise that security.

If it reduces fraud, ultimately we all save money as neither credit card companies nor retailers will suffer the financial penalties that come with it.
