if you have a wireless router then you won't need anything else, just connect and go.

You'll need more storage (in the form of a microSD card) for downloading apps etc - it only has 1/2 a GB.

  • I'd look at one 1st. The processor is quite old now as is the screen resolution. Most phones that have been brought out this year have better spec's and you/she might find it sluggish and not very responsive. I don't know how much Maplin is selling this for but maybe look at a Kindle Fire if the US pricing of $220 is representative (Kindle fire is $199 here)

Android 2.2 is designed for phones not Tablets. Look for one with Android 3.2 or better. These have loads of bugs ironed-out and work much better.
Tablets powered by Android may not be as cool as an iPad, but underneath the glossy interface, they both run BSDLinux, so are not as different as you may think (although the iPad does have superior battery life and loads more apps (the Android Marketplace is quickly catching-up though)).
I have seen a lot of these sub-standard Android Tablets kicking around and believe me, unless you are happy for your DD to shove it in a draw and forget about it, go for the best you can afford.

patman, I had a quick look at reviews for the tablet the OP mentioned, they were favourable, though they did say it was more like a large smartphone than a tablet. But it is very cheap.
An iPad or Android equivalent would be a lot better, but also much more expensive.

might just be me, but the fact that all internet browsing on the kindle fire is done through amazons servers (not on device like other tablets), I personally wouldn't want to do any internet banking or logging into email/websites on the kindle fire.
  • TBH I have a Nook Color (the Barnes & Noble equiv to the Fire) and have had it a year now so haven't really looked at the Fire in depth, I know some of their big features require an Amazon Prime subscription too ($89 per year)
I'd have thought it was pretty secure though, all my browsing/emails on my phone go through Blackberry servers and LloydsTSB give our business account manager a Blackberry too so they must be happy with that security!

Chrissy, if you are happy with it for what you expect your daughter to use it for then I'm sure it will be fine, my daughter is 3 and I'm getting her a Leapfrog Leappad, it's only 5" and nothing major spec wise but it's perfect for her IYSWIM :)
