Hello all
Am a bit of a lurker but would greatly appreciate some advice
My son is 8 and has had some form of assessment at school that has classed him as moderatly dyslexic he is receiving extra help with spellings which is where he has problems
It difficult to get an idea of any other areas where he is experienceing problems as his whole class appear to be behind levels of attainment
My question is do I need to get him professionally assessed or do i trust that the school have it all under control?

It's expensive but I would go for private testing. We did, eventually, and I wished we'd done it much earlier.
The tests my son did broke down exactly what his problems - and strengths - were. I could show him that he was doing much better in some areas, like comprehension, than his peers which helped to balance the negative feed-back from school.
The precise problems he had needed specific solutions. Just having extra time and being taught the same way as non-dylexics would have been no help to him at all.
He also went to Saturday morning classes run by the local dyslexia group and always said "I learn more on a Saturday than I do the whole of the rest of the week at school" - that's because the work was targeted at his problems and the teachers used a variety of teaching methods.0
