Hello,
New to thr forum, hope i am posting in the right place. Basically to start from the very start, in April 2010 my partner adopted a chocolate labrador !!!!!, she had been bred to exhaustion by her owner and dumped by a river (the things i would do if I found him), the age guessed at the pound was roughly 9 years old. Anyway on Wednesday this week a lump in her breast burst, in blind panic i took her straight down to pets at home after work, they agreed to perform a mastectomy on her the next day and to spay her to prevent it happening again as this would inhibit oestrogen or something (i'm not a vet clearly). The estimated bill was £619 which was bad enough, but the fee has now risen to £825.44, which i have had to pay in full by debit card when i picked her up yesterday. I am not rich and i have 2 young kids and it is 5 weeks before christmas. I have contacted the rspca and pdsa, they can't help as i am not on benefits (annoyed me beyond belief). I am not begging but asking for advice what to do as it has crippled my finances. Thanks

Unfortunately, there isn't really anything to do, she was treated so you have to pay. Could you ask the bank to extend your overdraft possibly to help you get through Christmas? Or could you apply for a 0% credit card? I think Tesco's is a good one.
The RSPCA and PDSA have to have criteria for who they help, or everybody would be at their door! I know that not being on benefits doesn't mean you're rich, but what would you have them do?
Did you try to insure her but couldn't because of her age?0 -
as you have agreed to have her treated im afraid you will have to foot the bill, can you not ask if they will accept installments? if you explain your situation there is a possibility they will let you, otherwise is there anyone who will loan you some money so you can pay them back when you can?
im in a similar situation with an abused/neglected persian so smypathise:(
also not sure if any financial help could be available from a labrador rescue? if there are some about and you explain how you come to have the poor girl they may be able to help fund treatment?
good luck jo x***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -
Who did you adopt the dog from? Can you contact them for help?
Its a pity they didnt tell you to take out insurance immediately.
The vet would probably have taken instalments.0 -
you chose to adopt a dog. you chose not to insure her. tough. if you take on a dog then you should be prepared for the financial outlay that comes with one.
why should someone else pay out? shes your dog. the vet may allow you to pay in installments.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
To be fair, most companies wouldn't insure a 9 year old pedigree dog.0

i assume you meant wouldn't insure. in that case the op should have put the money aside for this eventuality. say insurance costs £30 a month - that money goes into a savings account instead. no excuse to not do this, and if you cant afford it then you cant afford a dog.
dogs cost money in vet bills - everyone knows that. no one can plead ignorance and try to demand someone else pays for their pet.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Expesive but not extortionate, you have to put in on a parr with private human medical care.
It would probably have cost you a hell of a lot more it you had it done tfor you.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

You really are bordering on rude and sharpDSM, and there really is no need for it at all. The OP is desperate and you are being plain nasty. Please remember the rules of MSE. I know were all guilty of it at times but please...........
At no time did the OP try to demand that someone else pays for their pets medical helpmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

The OP is learning this the hard way.
As long as he pays this bill now and puts a plan in place for the future lets not be too harsh. A lot of people who are new to dog ownership are not as aware of the extent of vets fees, insurance etc. as seasoned doggy people.0 -

did you miss the part where the op said she was annoyed because the overstretched charities wouldnt help her because shes not on benefits? she contacted them after, so unless they are in possession of TARDIS, she wants them to pay out for her dog.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
