Simple answer is if you work full time for minimum wage or more, she's highly unlikely to be entitled to benefits. Do make sure to take advantage of tax credits as a couple though, if eligible.

Well my local Tesco got rid of lots of employees, for only a month later to be seeking Work Fare recruits via the local Job Centre. So it does obviously go on.

Considering we're coming up to the Xmas period, they would have taken on more staff regardless of whether or not they laid people off a month earlier.

At Tesco? That shining pillar of ethics? :rotfl:
Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.
Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

This was a couple of months ago. They've effectively laid people off and replaced them with unpaid labour. If people have already been laid off there is clearly no possibility of those being taken on at £0 per hour being taken on long term. If they want employees for Christmas they should be paying, not taking on free slave labour to fill a gap just because it's available to them.

Suppose there'll always be people rushing to defend unethical business practices, and exploitation of existing employees, the unemployed, and the tax payer (who effectively pays someone's wages while they work for a multi-million business).

WE will be seeing more of this and the companys concerned need to be named and shamed....pure scum...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

You act like you're surprised and this is something new. It is no different than they used to do with people on YTS in the 1980's...
  • People may be surprised because its so disgraceful, because its been done before and done in the USA ( workfare not working at Tesco) doesnt make it acceptable or less shocking.

I really stuggle to understand that anybody thinks its o.k working at a supermarket for dole money. The greedy b******S should pay at least the NMW especially when they are making billions in profits.

It's nothing new as a similar if not the same scheme was operating nearly 10 years ago. Companies would take somebody on for 6 weeks or so, they would get money equivalent to benefit entitlement. But no proper paying job was available at end of the 6 week period. It wasn't just large well known employers who participated either.
