Rents only go up! To infinity and beyond!

    I've been a renter.
    I now rent out.
Certainly my experince is that nominal rents only increase.

Perhaps you can point in time when rents didn't increase.
I'd be interested to see historically what drops there have been

  • Take a look at the headline. Rents are up again in England and Wales.

Errr, no they are not. The report show that rents went down in Wales and in some other parts of England.

All this report is showing is that the rental market is following a very similar path to the housing market in general. i.e London and the South East is on it's own and skewing the figures. I would also imagine that London has a very large rental market so skews the figures further still.

    That's 2% compounded = 26.8%

    0.2% compounded is 2.4%

Yes I know I was rushing out to work (hence missing the decimal point) when I posted that, unfortunatley I had no time to correct it. I realised as I set off for the train. It's 2.43% actually, which puts it between 2.4 and 2.5% (which was the original point of the dispute).

But thanks for avoiding any unnecessary sarcasm (as indeed I did in my original response, although it would have course been misplaced, given my error).

It's hardly 'twisting the knife' quoting a rate of rent increase below the level of inflation.
