It is difficult when you are used to having more than one income coming in and having to adjust!!
I was working full time then became ill myself in 2009, am on esa and dla as well. It might be worth checking about the contributions based esa as i thought i was on this as well until i went to CAB and discovered it had been changed to income based meaning i didn't have to pay for dental costs etc. I was also able to apply for a rates rebate although i didn't have any other income so not sure about that.
Your son at uni should also be able to apply for a hardship award through the uni itself, not just the charities you mentioned (again though i'm not sure about the situation with being at home).
I know you say your son has been trying to get a job and its certainly not easy at the minute, however there are ways of earning at least a bit on the internet - if you check out my positive steps challenge there are quite a few things listed on that thread: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3580411 or i can direct you to other options if this is of interest.
Hope it gets sorted out for you ok.

Do your sons know your financial situation?
If they do, they each need a kick up the !!!!!
If they don't, they need to!0 -

You really need to get sons on board to help you out.
My hubby is on ESA (CB) & i work fulltime - when my son was at home (he's now at Uni - funding himself through his degree) he paid board at least £35 a week when had a part time job - a bit more if he had extra & he still paid £25 a week when he was on JSA before he went to Uni. He was still horrified when he started paying for his own shopping at how much even the basics cost - but he's cracked on with it & i'm proud of him even if he is living on beans on toast & pot noodles:D but seriously;
You cannot keep paying for them - you're not doing them any favours at all trust me - and they should want to help you if you're struggling.
take care .x0
