Help cancelling a deceased persons home insurance

As in the title, my BIL died in April and I have been cancelling everything to help my disabled nephew, his home insurance are a joke and refuse to cancel it unless I pay more than they would have got in the full year if he had survived :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

They want cancelation fees to close the account but he didnt even leave enough to cover the funeral so thay have no chance and because they wont close the account the want default charges alongside the months fees for october and Novemebr :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I asked them to do a change of address to the grave yard but they wont, they insist thay want their money and they want it from me even though I didnt even like the bum hole and as he cant cover the funeral fees and the grant my nephew got dosnt come close his debts are none recoverable, thats the way things work but not for these jokers, they want their money!

Help.

They're entitled to recover what fee's they are due from his estate from what i can remember. However, if he has no estate......well to put it bluntly you're not liable.

I'd put it in writing and keep a copy for your own records should you need it.

if the policy is in your BIL name then who can they get the money from. if the insurance company is a member of the Association of British Insurers http://www.abi.org.uk/ they may be able to assist you.

you are not liable. How terrible. Have you written in, or are you trying to do this by phone?
  • I'd put it in writing, pointing out that there will be no money left in the estate after funeral costs.
If they have any sense, given the amounts they will hopefully quickly give up.
If there's no property or money being passed onto anyone then there is nothing they can claim from; the estate is deemed to be insolvent and as far as I know, nobody can be held liable for the debt.

Thanks for your replies, his bank account is closed now and thats why they are threatening default payments now, the balance in his account was in the red when he died and the funeral cost the grant plus well over £1k so my nephew has had to pay more than he could afford just to bury his dad.

The insurance broker (sorry I gave the wrong information but ive only just realised after googeling them what they are) are totally unreasonable and wont listen to anything I say, I wont give them my address etc. as I didnt sign anything so I wont be hounded by the registed letters etc. that they are sending to the now returned council house my BIL lived in, they just insist they WILL get their money from someone, anyone!

All the other people he owed money (not a lot of money but gas/electric, £8 rent and other small amounts) too have been ok with a copy of his band statment on the day he died and letters telling them he had no estate, my nephew did get @£200 selling appliances etc. from the house but thats it, thats all he left.

texranger can I complain to the ombudsman about an insurance broker? I honestly cant understand why he got his insurance this was as he was computor litrate, he cartainly cant have read the the terms and conditions or charges as they are totally unreasonable 9especially for a terminally ill man!)

Thanks to all who have read and repled to this again,

yes you can they are selling insurance so should be governed by the ABI.

they will give you advice, just wonder how they are going to get their money from a deceased person.

You could just try ignoring them. If there's no estate, debts die with a person and any attempt they make to get money out of you is pure harassment. I'd just cease contact with them and forget all about it. And name and shame them on here.

Also if they are only a Broker, OP have you contacted the actual insurance company as they may not be aware of the way the broker is acting and could take action from their end

Thats my current approach, they have my name and phone number and thats it, they ring at least twice a week and my husband tells them to get lost.

We have no dertails of the insurance company, all we have is letters from the broker who insist they are due money from the corpse or anyone else thay cn berate into giving them their pound of flesh but they did say the insurance comapny were demanding money from them but I disbelieve them as no one expects cancelation fees from a dead person as its not as though they just changed their mind.

Thankyou both for taking the trouble to read and reply.
