Santander gave out info about a loan over the phone...

Apparently, a direct debit didn't come out of my account for a loan payment with Santander. They rang up earlier whilst I was at work and kindly decided to ignore the data protection act and give information out to my parents.
What recourse do I have here?

You have the right to complain and will probably get a letter of apology.
I'd say don't waste your time.0 -
DPA breaches are taken serious by the FSA. However, as dzug1 said... its prob not worth the effort. Depends on what was said, did they give details about the balance etc or did they just said im call for joe blog to discuss the reason for non payment of his loan this month? If its the latter, I'm not sure its a DPA breach as such, but still should not have been said.If you keep on doing what's you've always done, you'll keep on being what you've always been...:think:0

If they have disclosed that you are even a customer to a third party then the FOS would view this seriously.
If they've revealed that you have a debt to somebody you didn't authorise them to tell, it would be take more seriously. If they get in to balance / late payment type conversations it's worse still.
I'd suggest you complain, identify what has been said and how it has affected you, and ask for a sum of money. £250 would be a good starting point.
If they don't make a satisfactory offer, escalate to the FOS. They will rule in your favour.0 -

and if we all made as much sense as you.... we'd be a nation of crayon eaters.0 -

I’ve been told I’m dead by Santander. As already stated, ask for compensation (they even have a compensation calculator internally now to test your dissatisfaction, however my view is to refuse this unless the following applies)
I’d ask them to pay the greater of the months’ payment or £300, which would be £250 plus your time. Please check this number before calling, as with anything on an open forum, however to moneysave, call 01908 237963. Don’t take my word for it, check it on the back of your card and on the website.
Ask to be put through to the complaints department (you have a right to state this has to be in the UK, and please, for the sake of your sanity and avoiding confusion, use it! There’s nothing more annoying than repeating everything 5-10 times to be understood) and don’t take the ‘lets see what we can do here’ approach. Some things are not reserved for CS teams.
Best of luck with these incompetent wastrels!
