to any one on the work programme, have you been put on a placement yet, have you asked about liable insurance, health and safety law, and employment law, as your a unpaid non employee when you get put on a placement, i would find out if you are covered through these three laws,
also when CAP starts after the 2 year work programme they will be forcing you on this for 6 months for your benefits, but they could be breaking your human rights by doing this and i think it should apply to the work programme also
going by article 4 in the human rights it looks like they cant do this
Restrictions
Your right to be protected against slavery and servitude is absolute. It can never be restricted.
The law relating to forced labour is also absolute. But it does not apply to work that you have to do as part of a prison sentence or a community sentence. Nor does it apply to work the government requires you to do in a state of emergency. Finally, it does not include normal civic obligations, such as maintaining a building if you are a landlord or deducting taxes from your employees’ wages if you are an employer.
What the law says
Article 4: Prohibition of slavery and forced labour
1. No one shall be held in slavery or servitude.
2. No one shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labour.
3. For the purpose of this Article the term "forced or compulsory labour" shall not include:
a) any work required to be done in the ordinary course of detention imposed according to the provisions of Article 5 of this Convention or during conditional release from such detention;
b) any service of a military character or, in case of conscientious
objectors in countries where they are recognised, service exacted instead of compulsory military service;
c) any service exacted in case of an emergency or calamity threatening the life or well-being of the community;
d) any work or service which forms part of normal civic obligations.

Um, no one is forcing you to do it. You can refuse. Of course your benefits will stop but then every action has a consequence and that is part of living in a free country. I think what you are suggesting is in fact pretty insulting to those people who have experienced REAL slavery.
But by all means start a blog, write to the Morning Star, chain yourself to railings. Whatever floats your boat.Debt free 4th April 2007.

If you’re getting Jobseeker’s Allowance, you may have to take part in the Work Programme after:- nine months - if you’re aged 18 to 24
- 12 months - if you’re 25 or over
esa
If you’re getting Employment and Support Allowance and are in the work-related activity group there are rules about taking part in the Work Programme. You may have to take part from three months before the date your doctor expects you to be fit for work.
There are some exceptions to this, like:- if you’re a full-time carer
- if you’re a lone parent with a child under five
If you don’t have to take part, you can volunteer to join the Work Programme.
To volunteer, you must be getting:- Employment and Support Allowance (and you’re in the ‘support group’)
- Pension Credit
Not everyone who volunteers to join the Work Programme will be able to. Depending on your circumstances, Jobcentre Plus may offer you different help instead.0 -

Easy then. Come off JSA or ESA and it isn't mandatory.
Now put down your wooden spoon.

I have lowered mine and still can't get one but do not object to the WPpaddedjohn wrote: »or you can go and get a job, they are out there if you look/lower your sights0 -
Same here, but then I've only been on the WP for a few weeks and am already finding it really helpful for me.
I have been given some really good suggestions for a cv and cover letter, and also had help with looking for work through loads of different websites. I am due to go onto some courses and get some interview skills to help me and thnk about a work placement soon as well, hopefully with the chance of a job at the end of it.
I think it's actually really helpful if you go in with an open mind, after all the same sort of service with a professional consultant agency could cost a fortune.
The only thing I wonder about though is why they want copies of actual job applications made and letters sent when they could get them off the employer if they wanted to?0 -
They put me on it after a lot less time than 12 months. I think about 8. Seeing as how my last job ended in mid Jan...work programme is mandatory for those on

I was supposed to go on a placement earlier this year but apparently all the local employers have said they wont take anyone on without a CRB check and the WP provider isn't prepared to pay for them.0
