Sony Rear Projection HD ready 42" TV Collect at store £575

This is a great price for a tv that is still over £1000 in some places. I bought one at £600 on new years day and I am very happy with it. Personally I think that the picture is better than most plasma and LCD sets that I have seen.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Everyone has been suspiciously quite! Is this a good deal, or a crap TV?
  • With LCD and plasmas plummeting in price I wouldn't buy a rear projection - not saying the new ones are bad quality but it's purely the width of them. Also from the ones I've seen if you are sitting at a bit of an angle to the TV then the picture looks dark/fuzzy. But that's just my opinion.

There was one on ebay recently, it had 14 bids and reached £580 (which was less that their reserve). I suppose this tells you that £575 is about all they are worth?

They are pretty nice, but also fairly huge. The other problem with them is if the lamp goes (and it's not covered under warranty) it costs about 200 quid to replace it.

In the end I bought an LCD.

i.ve got a 51" rear projection tv and i love it a part form it taking up a bit of space everything else is ok, i guess if you not use to it takes a while to get use too, But watching dvd is like being at the cinema. Plus i got a stand for my tv so can put my dvd player and PS2 underneath. Only down side is any other telly you look at seems like a protable lol

575 seems a bit much for a tv technology going out the window. They are huge, plasma's/LCD's being as cheap as they are right now seem the best option.

i got a 44" sony rear projector a few months back off ebay for £280, granted its not hiddef out the box but it makes a good stopgap till the flat panel tech matures.

it is a nice tv, the freeview software is a little buggy but for the price i paid it i can put up with it, that said if you are planning on £575 i wouldnt bother with rear projection, you can get lcds close to that price.

as i see it the only reason to buy a rear projector at the moment is either because its very cheap or its massive 55" or larger since lcds are plummeting in price and offer size savings and possibly better picture quality though i would be more dubious of that one.

Bare in mind a new bulb will cost you a few hundred quid when it goes.
