Do you need a P45 to update housing benefit?

Up until 31st October me and my husband were both working part time on a low wage. We were getting a bit of housing benefit (about £7 a week). He got made redundant on 31st oct and received a letter from his employer stating this which I took to HB. He has received his last payslip which I have also took in. Now we are waiting for his p45. Do we need it to update the HB? The hmrc told me the employer doesn't need to send one as my husband was earning below the threshold. We haven't received a letter from HB asking for his p45. I'm just presuming we will need it????

Nobody able to help? I've tried typing it in on google but I keep getting replies about new housing benefit claims, not ones that are already up and running but have to be adjusted.0

Thanks for your reply. I've just phoned the housing benefit office and they said they will need a p45 but my husbands ex boss says she can't give one because he wasn't earning over the threshold to get one. So what happens now? Do I have to pay full rent and put my kids in poverty just because someone won't give out a p45.0

No you need to explain to the council that he won't be getting a P45.Charityworker wrote: »Thanks for your reply. It's not needed I don't know why they are insisting on it.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I only needed my letter with my finishing date on and bank statements when I lost my job to update my circumstances for HB/LHA.Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind. They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.0

Just to let you all know I've just contacted my husbands ex employer and asked when his P45 will be sent. They said they didn't need to send one because he was earning under the threshold to need one. I then told them that by law they would have to send one and if he didn't get one I would be contacting the HMRC. They then said they would send one straight away and we should receive it on wednesday but they were doing it as a jesture of goodwill and they are not oblidged to send one! It's amazing what a posh accent at the end of a telephone can do.0

It has been received today but only after 6 phonecalls to the ex employer and 2 phonecalls to HMRC. Is it always so hard to get your P45?0

"Your employer should automatically give you a P45 when you stop working for them. If not, ask for it - you're entitled to it by law."0
