email for hotmail is it spam?

I keep getting emails from hotmail saying - Dear Valued Member,


We encountered a problem with our database and a lot of records were lost, we are restoring our database to enable us serve you better. Your Windows Live! Account details are required in our database to keep your account active. Failure to do this will make you lose your account permanently. Click the reply button and fill the details below :

they are asking for my account and password - I am not sure if this is genuine or not? Can someone advise me please.

  • Can you log in and view your own Windows Live! Account details? If so, then they have not been lost.
    It should be obvious that anybody asking for a password is trying to take control of your account, even if it appears to originate from the genuine site; remember, sites can be duplicated in appearance.

    If you don't log into your account periodically hotmail will delete it. (Might be 30 days? Not sure) If you supplied another email when you registered hotmail they might email to say if you don't log in you wont have an account anymore, but the wording is pretty clear and unambiguous, not like what you've posted.

    If you type hotmail dot com into the address bar and log in then you have solved the time-out problem. If the email wants you to log in via a link then always assume it's suspect. If you can log into hotmail the way you usually would and everything looks fine then everything is fine and your email is nonsense.
