garden drainage

I know it rains a lot in Middlesbrough but my garden is constantly flooded as it's thick clay.
Anyone have any solutions in draining all the water off? Last year it hardly dried all Summer.

I did a trade with the wifes cousins, I did some work for them in return for them digging a soakaway in the garden of our last house.
Believe me when I tell you...........I got the best deal and I was working for them for a week. !!
They must have shifted so much soil it was untrue. Not only have you to dig the soakaway, but you need to dig drainage channels as well. When it came to the soakaway, 1 cousin tackled this alone as the other two dug the channels, took him a day to dig it out. He must have gone about 7" deep at least. We filled this with a layer of brick to the bottom and sides, then filled it with pebbles.....two ton bags of them to be exact.
Looking at the excellent info given by others, it advises not to fill the pit in, but you need something to hold the sides up from falling in. If you can't afford the concrete collars, you may have to do the same.
It does work though. If only everything in life was as reliable...AS ME !!
