Monitor on the blink?

Hi,
I have a 5 year old 17" monitor which has developed the most annoying habbit of blinking whilst switched on.
It seems to be a random problem where the entire screen goes black for a split second then comes back again, with a faint clicking sound, this can be repeated at various intervals.
I have never had a monitor die on me before and just wonder if this is a sign to update it?
I have checked and replaced the power cable, to no avail.
The wire to the pc does seem a bit LUMPY in places but this goes directly into the monitor and there is no external connector.
Just wondering if anyone has had similar problems in the past?

IMO it's not the monitor.
The "Click" is the monitor not getting a signal.
Suspect your graphics card first and update the drivers.0
