  • After a look through the Microsoft knowledgebase i found a way, but warning it involves tinkering with the registry so only do it if you know what you're doing :)

  • Unfortunately it looks as though there is no easy way to do it such as just clicking an option :(

    Hi,
There is a solution to this, but it does involve downloading a bit of software from Microsoft, but fortunately its free!

The program is called TweakUI and its one of the Windows XP Powertoys range (software written by Microsoft but not officially supported).
The current download link is http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx.

Note although the programs say they are only for US English many of them work fine on my UK system (including TweakUI) and they have featured in various UK computer magazines, so most appear to be OK.

Also if you have a normal PC (ie one with an Intel / AMD / Via processor) ensure that you download the 'TweakUI.exe' link and do NOT download the 'Tweak UI for Itanium™ based systems' file.

    Simply install TweakUI.
It will appear under Microsoft PowerToys - TweakUI on your Programs menu. A windows will appear with lots of "+" symbols next to the areas you can modify.
You want to press the "+" next to "Logon". This will expand and you will click on "unread mail" You can then uncheck the "show unread mail on the welcome screen" and "apply setting to all users" from the left hand panel. Then press "Apply" and then "OK". That should solve your problem.

Note Tweak UI can also change the many of the default behaviours of bits of windows e.g. by preventing new windows stealing the focus from the window you are currently working in and alter your mouse scroll settings.

Needless to say, because this program is making changes in the registry behind the scenes, you should be cautious about checking and unchecking the options at random to see what happens!

    Hope this helps you!
  • I'm afraid not sorry, i never use user logon myself. Maybe someone out there can tell you

Yeah I use tweak UI and it will indeed repair the email post count, simply download and install the use the program so Start, Powertoys for Windows XP, Tweak UI, Repair, Drop down to Repair Unread Mail Count and click Repair Now, then exit Tweak UI this ofcourse should be done from the account with the dodgy mail count.
