I was a bridesmaid in the early 80s and I was put in a mint green dress calf length with a hoop and puff sleeves. I looked like one of those soft mints. We all had matching emerald green necklaces too. I had white shoes and pristine white ankle socks with lace round the top.

I had my hair in rags which were cut out the next day and made my hair 3 times the size it normally was............... I thought I was a princess :rotfl:

74jax.... you have brought back some memories for me about the dreaded rags. I hated them.
I was a bridesmaid when I was about five or six, also in a dress with puff sleeves.
For the wedding I had these wringlets ( made with rags) and two great big bows in my hair and of course the pristine ankle socks.
I cant remember the actual wedding or the colour of my dress because it was so long ago and the photos are black and white.

I was mortified with my hairdo and was gutted because my flowers dangled instead of having a bouquet like the others (the others were teenagers)

I think you look lovely SaLoGo.. really pretty.
  • Paying wise: We split our 3 ways, ourselves, my parents and his.

Living togther: Lived together for 8.5 years before getting married. Even more shocking was moving from Australia for him and moving straight into the spare room at his parents house. So I have never lived alone here in England...

Wedding breakfast: We had a buffet as a meal after the ceremony

Venue: No, we didn't have to decorate either. We dropped off the table center pieces, silver flowers to scatter the tables the day before and the person who has organised balloons for us dropped them off on the morning of the wedding. Everything was then decorated for us. My friend set up the cake how she wanted it to look as she'd made it up for us and had the cake stand etc.

Wedding favours: We got thank you gifts for our bridesmaid, bestman and I got one for my friend who did our wedding cake for free.

Outfits: Low key wedding, so my sister had her dress made by her husbands aunty for free, my parents bought the material. Bestman we simply said to wear a simple suit as my at the time husband to be was in black jeans (yes thats right), black shirt and a white/grey tie.

    Buttonholes: None

Money: Never asked for any, whatever guests felt comfortable getting us, had no gift list either. Amazingly a few people did ask if we had a gift list.

Veil: Yes, but only one that pinned underneath my hair, did not go over my face at all

Horseshoes etc: Yes, I got two, as well as love heart put onto my wrist by my mum who had bought them over from Australia with her from my relatives.

Confetti: Yes, but only my mother in law bought it and she'd asked the venue if it was ok
    .
Make up/hair dressers: Yes, went to the hairdressers and yes had someone come and do my make up.

Save the date cards: No, but we did plan our wedding within 6 mths, lol. Just got a save the date magnet though for a friends wedding in March 2013

Invitations: Yes, printed online, through ebay company. However added own personal touch to them.

Here is 2 photos of me, bit of a difference :)

Me & my sister - Our uncle/aunties wedding (now divorced - would of been late 80's as my sister was born in 85). This was the only time I was a flower girl. My at the time beautiful dress went into my dress up box at which when my sister could wear it, she did, with the funny tap shoes, :rotfl:

I've found a couple of pics of my horseshoe, my cousin had it made for us especially, so it was a lovely suprise!

  • I love this thread! It's really interesting to look back at how weddings have changed over the years.

I remember at weddings as a little girl being given a horseshoe by my mum to present to the bride after the ceremony - that was in the 80s. I don't remember anything about rolling pins though! Oh, and at my cousin's wedding (1990 I think) my parents, siblings and I all had buttonholes, which my mum made. I agree it's unusual to see guests who aren't part of the wedding party wearing them these days.

I think a lot of the reason for people doing their own decorations for the venue is down to the type of venue used, and the cost of some of the venues which do them for you! We're quite lucky in that both our day and evening venues allow us to drop the decorations off the day before, but some more informal venues don't really offer that.

I'm doing my own hair and make up, partly due to budget, and partly due to wanting to look like me, not like someone else's vision of what a bride looks like!

  • I was given a Brass horseshoe on my Wedding (this summer) and I was so pleased - I had secretly wanted one but didn't think it was right to get my own, so I was over the moon when I was presented with one to carry with my flowers :)
